I'm flipping upset.
Accuweather is a private company trying to forecast the weather by using governmental data. The government got the data, the government has experience with forecasting, and it is part of its domain in the protection of the common wealth. Because of NWS products lives are saved. Before tornadoes killed many more people, before people were struck by hurricanes with little to no warning. Our government has developed a sophisticated but underfunded method of serving its citizenry the best possible advice.
Accuweather won't agree with the NHC even when the data suggests they should, because they rely on the fallacy of positive occurance. You remember when Joe Bastardi nails the storm and you forget about his many errors. He doesn't publish his forecasts to NHC standards, his getting a storm right or wrong is much less impressive.
Yet it seems that our administration has looked to Accuweather when our tax dollars fund the NHC. They have allowed themselves to be decieved by the model that competition encourages advancement. That way be so in developing nuclear missiles and tanks, but here in the sciences most advances are made through cooperation and interaction between scientists. There is no need for a private weather organization to challenge the NHC and make them walk a better line.
The NHC is driven by a common desire to save lives and property. Accuweather is driven by a more base and more common desire to enrich and make a name.
This disgusts me because the appropriate action was countermanded by I see as individual interest. Just stupid. They should fire everyone who did not follow the appropriate method.
