Florida minimum wage to go up by 25 cents in 2006

(09.30.05) — The state's minimum wage went up to six-15 an hour in May because of a constitutional amendment approved by voters in 2004. The Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation says the amendment tied the state's minimum wage to inflation, requiring an adjustment each year. The six-forty rate will start January first. For workers whose tips are counted as part of their wage, the minimum will go from the current three-13 an hour to three-38 starting January first, plus the worker's tips. Almost 400-thousand workers of the state's over eight (m) million-person work force earn the minimum wage.

Ontario's is $7.15 I believe, maybe $7.50, heck 15 and 50 sound the same!

This makes me wonder.. My Wal Mart store and probably most across Florida lol.. start their employees at $6.50. Would they keep those at that rate.. would they raise their starting pay because the states' minimum wage is only gonna be 10 cents below the start pay rate

I wouldn't give a raise just because the government was trying to interfere with the economy. They'll probably keep you all at 6.50 starting out.

Actually, it was a petition drive, not "government interference" that put the minimum wage issue on the ballot in Florida last year.

It's also supposed to increase each year. So eventually, even Wal-Mart will have to raise their pay, at least in Florida. I suppose they could pull out of the state altogether, right?

We live in a Republic not a democracy. So if the Republic allows things like constitutional ammendment referendums I still place the fault of those referendums on the government.

And no walmart won't pull out of Florida, but prices will accordingly adjust. That's just economic fact.

I have to say I wouldn't love any job that wasn't either the start of a career or gave me above 20 dollars an hour, along with being something I enjoyed. Because for myself being put into a slot isn't my aspiration.

I understand that these jobs exist for an economic reason, and people make choices based on what they can get for their return.. but I can't say I'd love being part of a retail empire.

If they're trying to indoctrinate store members into a community feeling, I guarantee you 100% its all because of the bottom line and productivity. Management simply doesn't care about anything but stock price and the profits involved. Can't expect them to do otherwise unless its owned by a small group of people privately.

Not IMO. If someone's willing to pay $1.00/hr. for a particular job and a prospective employee thinks it's a fair deal, it's an agreement that no third party has any right getting involved in.

This minimum wage business has the potential to cause unemployment figures to go up.

The way I see it, if an owner of (say) a supermarket has a choice between hiring cashiers who each have to be paid minimum wage (along with all the hassles like disputes with labour unions etc.) and investing in expensive robots to do the same job, she'll likely shell out the cash for the robots. After all, with the exception of some periodic maintenance, robots are pretty much hassle free. This is the harsh but true reality of our world today.
