Stray dogs on this island near France are being used as shark bait.

While they are alive

Not a source I'd cite, but if true this is horrible. Animals have feelings too and dogs are supposed to be man's best friend. Says something awful about man when they'd use their best friend as shark bait. Dogs are for companionship, not bait, same applies to cats.

I can't even read that article.
I read an indepth Reader's Digest article a few years ago, about US dog fighting rings. I'm telling you right now, it made me SOB. And hug my dog for an hour. They electrocute dogs in several inches of water and electrodes attached to them, when they're no longer able to fight, they have so called "Vets" stitch (i.e. staple, without anesthetic) up wounds, sending the dog right back in. They train them on treadmills.
And the kicker, as if that isn't sad enough (it's horrible, IMHO), they kidnap family dogs, right out of yards and on front porches, and use them as bait in these dog fights.
Ready to cry all over again.

What the.........??????? How would you even come up with that idea. For what reason? I guess some people have a sick way of amusing themselves.

When I followed the link I could not find the story on that page, good thing I guess I don't think I want to hear the whole story anyway. I am an animal lover and it would just upset me. I am found saving even the smallest animal that some would squish. I don't get it, no compassion for life.

Actually... that's Reunion Island. Although a French-controlled island, it's not near France. It's east of Africa in the Indian Ocean.

To clarify the story and give you the nutshell, so you guys don't have to see the picture.
...the practice does not appear to be as widespread or horrific (or tolerated) as implied by recent news stories. Rather than describing hordes of shark fisherman impaling live dogs on hooks and dragging them behind boats as shark bait, the article notes that employing dogs in shark-fishing is largely the province of a small group of amateur fisherman rather than large numbers of professionals, that the dogs used are generally dead animals picked up from roadsides or culled from the island's large population of unwanted strays (estimated at 150,000), and that the no-longer-alive animals are attached to unattended buoyed "shark trap" platforms rather than dragged alive behind boats.
Still cruel and bizarre....

Yes, that is still cruel. I'm assuming we incinerate road kill in our country? I should hope so. Imagine you're out for a fun boat ride with your family and you see a fishing boat dragging a dog that was hit by a car? Someone's family pet maybe? I agree Shawn, it still isn't a nice practice. Or ethical.
So dare I ask, were ANY of these dogs alive as they were dragged along as bait?
I can't bring myself to look at any of those links.
I think I've kissed my dog's snout a dozen times today! You know, so as to tell her species I'm sorry......sounds silly but I know you petted your dog's snouts too Dennis!

I'll pass on looking at the pictues as I don't like to see animals that should be companions suffer. Anything done to the jerks who would do such a cruel thing they deserve, in my opinion.
