Well at age 44 I recieved my first pair of bifocals today. My eye exam revealed farsightedness which is common in middle age as well as nearsightedness ive had all my life due to astigmatism. The farsightedness proved to be the biggest challenge as it made reading difficult since I had to hold whatever I was reading at arms length. Since lengthening my arms was out of the question the eye doc prescribed bifocals. I like them; it will take me a few days to adjust though. 'Squints'

Welcome to the club! I've been wearing glasses for nearsightedness since I was 10 and for farsightedness since I was in my early 40s, too (I'm 55 now).
Some advice on adjustment: Hold onto that handrail when walking down stairs! (I still have to....)

I also wear bi-focals, been wearing them since I was 24. I used to wear the lineless ones, now it doesn't really make a difference to me whether I have lines in them or not.

i wear contacts but my husband cant stand them.......he wears glasses and hes 46 and he recently got bi-foculs too.....he said it took him a while to get used to them also..

I have worn glasse almost all my life. I started wearing glasses in the 5th grade. Recently I had to get my glasses changed and ended up getting trifocals. it took a while to get used to them , it made verything look like it was doing a "Wave" when I turned my head from side to side. I have to have sunglasses since I am out in the sun most of the time school is getting out for the day, and the prescription pair I had made up , I can't get used to them so I bought a pair of clip on sun shades that slip on my regular glasses that work just like sunglases. Having to get new glasses is very expensive nowdays. My regular and sunglasses cost almost $800.00.

You said it! I've been putting off an exam for the past few months to help budget the expense -- I'm sure I'll have a prescription change and the frames I've had for the past 5 years are really wearing out.

I also wear prescriptive bifocal sunglasses, although I have the type of frames that you can also buy sunglass lenses which attach magnetically.

I tried trifocals 4 years ago. After several weeks of exactly what you describe I gave up and went back to regular bifocals. I just take off my glasses or slide them down my nose for that visual range (annoying but not as visually disturbing as the trifocals were for me).

$800, ouch. I'm sure glad I can get my bi-focals through the VA for $40.

DeeBee, I bought those same kind of frames for my regular glasses but for some reason I am not comfortable wearing them. There is a space of about a quarter of an inch between the shade and the regular glasses that irritates me to no end. The clip on I bought has no space and it doesn't change the color of things like the magnetic one does. I bought the clip on one at Wal_Mart and I carry it with me where ever I go. When I go out for my afternoon crossing duty, I clip the shade on before walking out the door and leave the case for it lying on my computer desk. Since I am out on crossing duty before sun comes up in the mornings , I stick the case in my pocket and put them on after the sun rises.
