Pointless Posts

Good morning everyone!

In another topic we got on the subject of pointless posts and I forgot to ask the admins., the other day after a post by Marshall, a question.

What qualifies as a pointless post? I am just curious because I don't want to waste space if I am making them, but I am not quite for sure what kinds of posts the mods. are wanting to avoid. I posted it here in the Off-topic so everyone could see the response instead of pvting in case anyone else had the same question.

Thanks!
Garrett

If the intent of a post is to just get up your post count or to reply to every thread then it's pointless. Sometimetimes it's may be appropriate to only post an "I agree" message if you don't have anything to add but if the majority of a person's posts are this way then it leads to questions on why a post was even necessary. It's no different in regular conversation. If all you do is say "I agree" then the conversation doesn't last long! :-) If you are looking for a hard and fast rule then there isn't one. Common sense has to apply.

The other thing that we wanted to stop was the endless posting in the Tips forums. The intent of that forum is to give people a chance to get help resolving problems with the board. Chad and I are in the best position to help resolve these problems. Too many times these threads become regular topics with extraneous posts. Again, if someone has a specific contribution to the topic at hand then please post. If not then this forum should be left alone.

Thanks Marshall. I was just not sure what you meant and I kept meaning to ask but I forgot. Thanks for the clarification.

Yes, a good topic here, Garrett. :)

The way I see it... many members may see a post being pointless because it doesn't add much to the board. However, I don't think we should be PMing someone to acknowledge their post in a particular forum and thread. In fact, it is a nice gesture to acknowledge fellow members in public, if you will... right here out in the open.

A PM takes up server space too.

Private messaging serves a purpose. I assume that many of our private messages don't remain on the site for that long. I don't receive too many PM's. I notice members at least accessing their "PM-box" when I view "Who is Online" on the main page.

We have limited the size of everyone's PM mailboxes. If you don't deleted messages you will run out of room :-)

I think regular members only get 75 for their limits, right?

Here are the current limits. They apply to all members regardless of rank :-)

I agree "LOL!" Sorry......couldn't resist that one!

I had trouble with AHEM....one particular member at the other board, posting one word replys in order to get his count up, if I'm not mistaken, AHEM.......he also did it here too!
