I once worked at a children's psychiatric unit and one of the children set fire to one of the rooms. The administrator had the sixty children and staff sit down at the far end of the hall. I never understood us not being evacuated outside in the courtyard. The smoke was extremely heavy. Many of the children were seriously ill and trying to keep them calm when the staff was upset didn't help matters. I know she was afraid one or more of the children might try to scale the fence and run but at least they would be alive. We had so many little ones (6 months to five years) I was afraid all seventy of us going through one door wouldn't make it if the fire had gotten out of control.

People have gotten so drawn into to their own "little world",
nowadays, that they're oblivious to anything in the world
around them, except what they want, and, they want it...
...NOW!

Our smoke alarms go off at least once a month a work. A loud ear piercing shrill. Usually from some kid pulling on them or security running a test. None of our customers budge from their shopping either. They totally ignore it and continue shopping.
