Following are the safest and most dangerous cities with populations over 75,000, according to Morgan Quitno Press.

Safest Cities:
1. Newton, Mass.

2. Clarkstown, N.Y.

3. Amherst, N.Y.

4. Mission Viejo, Calif.

5. Brick Township, N.J.

6. Troy, Mich.

7. Thousand Oaks, Calif.

8. Round Rock, Texas

9. Lake Forest, Calif.

10. Cary, N.C.



Most Dangerous Cities:

1. Camden, N.J.

2. Detroit

3. St. Louis

4. Flint, Mich.

5. Richmond, Va.

6. Baltimore

7. Atlanta

8. New Orleans

9. Gary, Ind.

10. Birmingham, Ala.

Camden, NJ is not my city, but about 20 miles to my northeast.

Not a shocker though.

I'm glad my city's not on the Dangerous list.

Nice to see Cary, NC on the 10 safest cities list...Cary's not too far from Raleigh.

St. Louis is only the THIRD most dangerous city? We wuz ROBBED.

Los Angeles should be one of the most dangerous cities. Same goes for NYC, Philly, and Cleveland.

I heard Simi Valley, CA was pretty safe. It ain't in the safe list for some reason.

And oh yea I have been to Los Angeles twice......I have two aunts who live in southern Cali..... and LA was really freaky!!! Man just shows how much of a small town woman I am!!

New Orleans is on the most dangerous list. And New Orleans is only 60 miles to my southwest. An hour drive. I have not been to New Orleans since Katrina. Katrina took care of the crime problem for the most part since it was deserted after. But, the murders are starting to happen again now.

Kinda? I see the mess that is called "traffic" everyday on the news... I try to avoid it whenever possible, but it's BEYOND scary. First of all, there's like 10 lanes...

I went to high school in Mission Viejo, CA and my mom lives in Lake Forest, CA. Both very good areas, I can tell you that from personal experience.

(They border each other, maybe that's why. )

I never have driven in Cali........but I have driven in Atlanta a couple times!!

I never have driven in Cali........but I have driven in Atlanta a couple times!!

I never been to Atlanta but I can tell you that So. Calif roads are bad - IF you take the wrong routes during wrong times. Non rush hour or weekend times, on routes that have carpool lanes, you'll be fine. Any other place at any other time - yeah you're pretty much stuck.

The Safest Large City in North America

Toronto is a remarkably safe and clean city in a remarkably safe and clean country. Even though Toronto is Canada's largest city, it is sixth in the level of violent crime, with a lower crime rate than both of Canada's other large cities — Vancouver and Montreal. The Greater Toronto Area traditionally has had remarkably lower crime rates than all large U.S. cities; as an example, in 1996 Toronto's per capita homicide rate was less than 10% of that of any large U.S. city.

That being said... the city of Toronto's homicide rate has fluctated from between 49 and around 60 in recent years. However, since this past summer, the escalation of inner-city gang war-fare has brought on a vast upsurge in the gun violence reported. In fact, it is not uncommon now for news of people being injured or dying to gunshots, in the city and on the outskirts.
So much so that the media is keeping it on the front burner of their newscasts daily, and to date, the 2005 homicide total for the city of Toronto has now reached 70, the highest recorded, certainly in recent history.

On the contraire, Canada's most dangerous large cities have been listed as Saskatoon, Regina and Winnipeg.

Raleigh borders Cary and I heard was further down the list on the safest cities side. Good to see . Although Durham did make it further down on the dangerous cities list. I heard this on the radio this morning.

Study: Dallas 5th-most dangerous large city in U.S.

In a true tale of two cities, Dallas and Fort Worth have ended up on opposite sides in a book listing the safest and most dangerous places to live in the U.S.

The new edition of City Crime Rankings ranks Dallas as the fifth-most dangerous city in the country with a population over 500,000. In the same population category, Fort Worth ranked as the ninth-safest city.

Dallas Mayor Laura Miller was unavailable for comment.

Fort Worth Mayor Mike Moncrief attributed his city's positive ranking to an increased police presence, community policing and a half-cent sales tax increase last year that is providing more funds for crime prevention.

“Being in the top ten is great, but we are still not satisfied," Moncrief said. "One of the City of Fort Worth’s strategic goals is to become the nation’s safest major city.”

On the overall list of most dangerous cities, Dallas ranks 22nd. Camden, N.J., topped the list, followed by Detroit and St. Louis.

Round Rock, Texas, an Austin suburb, made the overall safest list at No. 8.

Other Texas cities on the lists include Houston, which ranks as the ninth-most dangerous metropolis with a population over 500,000. On the list of safest cities over 500,000, El Paso is second, Austin is fifth and San Antonio came in at eighth.

In the category of Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs), the Wichita Falls area came in at 21st on the most dangerous list.

City Crime Rankings has been released each year since 1994 by Morgan Quitno Press, a Kansas-based publishing and research firm. Company officials said the rankings are based on FBI 2004 statistics in six crime categories: murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and motor vehicle theft.

Not a shocker to me though.

However, I do find it weird that my hometown is one of the safest cities. And Dallas which is east of me is dangerous.

My hometown of Irving has a population of over 190,000 and it's west of Dallas, and yet, it's one of the safest cities I know.
