I used to download all my music from Winmx, but that site is gone now. Now looking for a new site. What do you use whether its free or pay?

I pay for Napster. $10/month and i can listen to any music and dl songs that are mine to keep for .99 and i can also dl albums. I don't dl any songs for free for fear of getting caught and it seems they're cracking down on illegal dl's. These artists are being cheated if you dl their songs for free. I wouldn't like someone to take away my income.

iTunes - pure and simple. I too would never download unless I paid for it. We know far too many local musicians and I could never look them in the eye again, if we did that!

Why is it cheating the artists to download a song for free to keep and listen to later but it was never cheating the artists to record a song from the radio onto a cassette for free to keep and listen to later?


When I've downloaded songs in the past, if I really liked it, I would buy the CD anyway. DL'ing made no difference in that. I used Napster way back when it was free, but haven't been there in a while. I think I started using WinMx somewhere along the way, then Kazaa, then Ares.

I know one music site where you can set up your own online radio station for free: http://music.yahoo.com.

Any downloads are $.99.

I really don't want to pay because I am really tired of paying $12 to $17 for cd's when there are only 3 to 5 decent songs on the cd's. Plus the record company makes more money off of cd's than the artist. Artist make more money when they tour.

The radio station has to pay the recording company every time they play a song. And if you remember recording from the radio the quality was far from the best!

Is it true that with some services, if you stop using that service, then your files become unuseable? Sounds like you are RENTING songs in such an arrangement.

I want a service in which I pay for and own the file, period.

I think that the issue with people recording off the radio, etc in the past is that they would make two or three crappy tapes and pass them along. With the digital age, one person can distribute thousands of high-quality copies in just minutes.

Paying full price for what turns out to be only a one or two "good song" cd is frustrating. I have gotten into the habit of checking a lot of online reviews to see if the whole cd is worth buying. This is exactly why I am now trying to catch up to the internet music scene, and to buy my music by the song, not the album.

Yes, Napster is an example of where you are basically "renting" the music.

Soulseek is another option. My sister uses it and I've asked her d/l some music there. And there is always Bittorrent.

There is a monthly unlimited music for $14.95 option on Napster. If your computer/mp3 player doesn't check in after a certain amount of time or you cancel the service you lose access to the songs you d/l.

Hey! I didn't say I had good sources

Limewire rocks . Just disable file sharing and you're all set

I used to use WinMX and Kazaa Lite together. I don't go for new songs; I'm just replacing/digitizing my old records/tapes.

Waiting for the RIAA to knock on my door so I can flash an empty tape case and giggle.



Kazaa Lite is free and isn't bundled with spyware. Just be careful of what you dl. But with the RIAA going nazi on dl'ers, there isn't a large amount of users/files as there used to be.
