Purported Bin Laden audio vows U.S. attacks
Al-Jazeera says it obtained audio of al-Qaida leader

Updated: 10:25 a.m. ET Jan. 19, 2006
CAIRO, Egypt - The Arab television news station Al-Jazeera on Thursday aired a new audiotape purported to be from al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden.

The tape warns that al-Qaida members are preparing new strikes inside the United States but that a truce is also possible if the security of Muslim nations is guaranteed.

It was not clear when the tape was made.

U.S. intelligence analysts were expected to study the audio to see if it matches known Bin Laden voice samples.

I don't think we should allow anything said by bin Laden influence our thinking at all. Unfortunately, there will be many on both political sides who will use this as fodder against the other side, and that's really too bad.

Naturally, I've got a lot more to say on what we should be doing, but it would be bound to turn political so I'll keep mum. 8-)

This kind of thing is a no-lose proposition from bin Laden's point of view. He's playing to his audience (radical Muslims first, the average Arab Muslim second) and his aim is to build the mystique which would make him credible as Caliph of a newly united pan-Arab union.

From that point of view, he can use pretty much anything we do - whether we stay in Iraq longer, or get out sooner or whatever - because when you get down to it we're never going to completely leave the Middle East (and we certainly shouldn't) and as long as we're there he still has his reason for making war on us (and using that to further build his mystique).

That's why I say that regardless of what each of us may think is the right thing for America to do, we should on no account allow what bin Laden says to influence our own thinking nor (to the extent possible) promulgate the idea that his words do have influence.

He's our enemy, and I don't see anything realistically ever changing that.

he's asking for a truce

seems like our efforts are really putting the crimp on him as he was not calling for a truce in the past... only our total destruction

I don't think it's coincidential that this tape is released the day after Pakistan confirmed one of Al-Qaeda's top Chemical Weapons expert was killed in the airstrike last week.

Yeah, and if you believe that, he's also got a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you - complete with blowtorches. :-)

The Al Qaeda network is nothing more than a complete joke these days. First, we missed killing #2 Zawahiri last week by a hair. The drone killed severel top notch Al Qaeda officials plus Zawahiri's son-in-law. The video had no mention of that because it was made in December. Second, now Bin Laden wants to make a truce? Wow, how stupid does he think people are??? The US wasn't in Iraq or Afghanistan during the terror attacks in the late 90s, nor was the US in either country during 9/11. OBL acts like the war is focused on the government, so why did 2,000 people die in the WTC, and are thousands of innocent civilians being killed worldwide every year. Finally, we have already seen the outcome of these so called "truce offers". Spain was attacked. Spain then elected a PM that didn't believe in the WOT and they decided to pullout of Iraq thereafter as part of the "truce" Al Qaeda gave to Europe. Six months later, intel officials find out that there was a plan in the works to bomb Spain's parliament off the face of the earth.

I'd also like to add that Bin Laden offered the US a "truce" in December 2004. The truce was if you elect John Kerry Al Qaeda becomes our friend!!! If we elect Bush, then expect to get hit. Well, it's been a looooong year and I don't see any terror attacks?

Then he says the reason why the US hasn't been hit in 4.5 years is because the attacks are still in planning. What a JOKE. There have been at least 2-3 MAJOR terror attacks foiled inside the USA since 9/11.

http://edition.cnn.com/2005/US/10/06/whitehouse.plots/

1. West Coast Airliner Plot:

In mid-2002 the United States disrupted a plot to use hijacked airplanes to attack targets on the West Coast of the United States. The plotters included at least one major operational planner behind the September 11, 2001 attacks.

2. East Coast Airliner Plot:

In mid-2003 the United States and a partner disrupted a plot to use hijacked commercial airplanes to attack targets on the East Coast of the United States.

3. The Jose Padilla Plot:

In May 2002 the United States disrupted a plot that involved blowing up apartment buildings in the United States. One of the alleged plotters, Jose Padilla, allegedly discussed the possibility of using a "dirty bomb" inside the United States. Bush has designated him an "enemy combatant."

4. 2004 British Urban Targets Plot:

In mid-2004 the United States and partners disrupted a plot to bomb urban targets in Britain.

5. 2003 Karachi Plot:

In spring 2003 the United States and a partner disrupted a plot to attack westerners at several targets in Karachi, Pakistan.

6. Heathrow Airport Plot:

In 2003 the United States and several partners disrupted a plot to attack London's Heathrow Airport using hijacked commercial airliners. The planning for this alleged attack was undertaken by a major operational figure in the September 11, 2001 attacks.

7. 2004 Britain Plot:

In the spring of 2004 the United States and partners, using a combination of law enforcement and intelligence resources, disrupted a plot to conduct large-scale bombings in Britain.

8. 2002 Arabian Gulf Shipping Plot:

In late 2002 and 2003 the United States and a partner nation disrupted a plot by al Qaeda operatives to attack ships in the Arabian Gulf.

9. 2002 Strait of Hormuz Plot:

In 2002 the United States and partners disrupted a plot to attack ships in the Strait of Hormuz, the entrance to the Persian Gulf from the Indian Ocean.

10. 2003 Tourist Site Plot:

In 2003 the United States and a partner nation disrupted a plot to attack a tourist site outside the United States. The White House did not list what site that was.

We must be having some kind of effect on OBL, if he is even alive.

Crawling around from cave to cave, night after night sure can't be fun.

I don't think that calling for a truce is indicative of progress. For one thing, nothing says that any truce we eneter will be honored by him. For another, it's a win-win situation for him. If we enter a truce with him and pull out, he wins. If we choose not to enter the truce, he uses our failure to cooperate as further incentive for terrorist recruiting.

Please explain yourself how we have impacted his network? I do not see any let down in attacks or bombings.

I take that to mean that he knows he's about to lose and that we are winning big time and should turn up the heat some more. He's starting to negotiate, the first sign of weakness

As noted in my post above, his call for a truce is more of a call for us to surrender. He holds all the cards.
