RAMALLAH, West Bank - Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia and his Cabinet ministers submitted their resignations Thursday as the Islamic militant group Hamas appeared to have captured a large majority of seats in the Palestinian elections — a shocking upset sure to throw Middle East peacemaking into turmoil.

With this result the peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians are in serious doubt now.

Hamas are terrorists, not dictators...

Hamas are Terrorist but a few south american country's have now dictators. Hamas said clearly that they are going to keep up trying to destroy Israel. This is very very bad.

If anything will totally destabilize the middle east this will!!!! I don't like it at all, especially with the rhetoric that has started on both sides already.

Alicia, "GOOD"= INTERESTING. Things are not goint to disintegrate fast, unless the U.S. pulls one of its favorite foreign policies (will not get political here). I am going to reserve judgment and see how it goes.

It is not looking good...Something tells me we are on the edge of WWIII. This is likely to get bad very fast.

okay, a political party(who are also a recognized terrorist group) that advocates destruction of a country and actively pursues that end by murdering people wins an election and things arent going to disintegrate? they've already rushed the parliament building....

have you ever even been to Israel? i have... several times. I have numerous close friends there and am greatly concerned for their safety.

Agree with that David.I see this victory by Hamas as a big setback in the peace proccess with Israel and for sure will destabilize the middle east more than what it is now.I am very sure that Iran is very happy with this.

Hamas is an Islamic fundamentalist group that wants a Palestinian state.

• Its military wing, Izzedine al Qassam, has claimed responsibility for many terrorist operations, including suicide bombings in Israel, as well as attacks on Israeli troops and Jewish settlers in Gaza and the West Bank.

• Hamas has called for the destruction of Israel, but that demand was not central to its platform in the Palestinian elections. However, it continues to refuse to recognize the right of the state of Israel to exist.

• In its election campaign Hamas portrayed itself as an alternative to the corruption-plagued Fatah -- the group founded by Yasser Arafat and now led by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas that has dominated Palestinian politics for decades.

• Hamas runs humanitarian activities in the West Bank and Gaza -- building schools and hospitals as well as social projects.

• Its fighters have mostly observed a cease-fire for the past year.

• The United States, the European Union and Israel consider the group a terrorist organization.

• Previous leaders Sheikh Ahmed Yassin and Abdel Aziz Rantisi were killed in separate Israeli airstrikes in 2004.

• In Arabic, the word "hamas" means zeal, but it's also an Arabic acronym for "Harakat al-Muqawama al-Islamiya" or Islamic Resistance Movement.

WASHINGTON - President Bush on Thursday did not rule out dealing with Hamas, which won the Palestinian parliamentary elections, but said the militant Islamic group would have to renounce its call for Israel's destruction.

“Peace is never dead,” Bush said at a news conference when asked if he ruled out ever dealing with Hamas.

But he added that “if your platform is the destruction of Israel, it means you’re not a partner in peace, and we’re interested in peace.”


Asked in a follow-up question if he was ruling out dealing with a Palestinian government that was made up partly of Hamas, he replied: “They don’t have a government yet, so you’re asking me to speculate on what the government will look like. I have made it very clear however that a political party that articulates the destruction of Israel as part of a platform is a party with which we will not deal.”

Bush called the election results a “wake-up call” to the old guard Palestinian leadership, many of whom are holdovers from the days of Yasser Arafat.

The Hamas victory “reminds me about the power of democracy,” he said. “You see, when you give people the vote, give them the chance to express themselves at the polls and they’re unhappy with the status quo, they’ll let you know.”

From the Israeli Prime Minister's office:

2005 was marked by the tahdia ("declared calm") that was declared on 22.1.05 and according to which, the Palestinian groups committed themselves to refrain from perpetrating terrorist actions against Israel.

However, despite the aforesaid commitment, 2,990 terrorist attacks were perpetrated against Israeli targets in 2005. The firing of Kassam rockets even increased in 2005, as compared to 2004, with 377 rocket attacks in 2005, as opposed to 309 in 2004.

An increase in the number of terrorist attacks was also apparent in Judea, with 379 attacks after the 22.1.05 declaration, as opposed to 288 attacks in the same time frame before the declaration. The most significant decline was registered in the Gaza Strip, with 1,205 attacks after the 22.1.05 declaration, as opposed to 2,637 before.

Regarding the number and level of warnings in 2005, it was possible to see that the terrorist organizations' motivation to attack Israeli targets did not change. The number of monthly warnings remained – for the most part – fairly high.
