A House committee has narrowly approved a bill that would allow public high schools to offer a course teaching the Bible. The seven to five vote today in favor of the bill came after a more than three-hour public hearing. During the hearing Republicans and representatives of Christian groups questioned the need for the course and accused Democratic supporters of playing politics with religion. The vote fell along party lines. Democratic members voted in favor of the measure and Republicans voted ``no.'' Most of the opponents objected to the bill specifying that the course would use a new textbook titled ``The Bible and Its Influence.'' The opponents say the textbook includes questionable content and bypasses the state Board of Education process for selecting textbooks. But the sponsor of the bill, House Majority Leader Rep. Ken Guin of Carbon Hill, says the course will provide a constitutional way to teach the Bible in public schools. He says the course will help students understand Biblical references in literature.

They should strike down that law, taxpayer money should not be used to teach religious texts. This is a bad law.

Also since you agree with it ...Is it ok to teach evolution in your church?

I am not getting into this one since I live in Alabam and I am probably one of those counties that is supporting it.

I believe I read somewhere that it's being taught as a literature course. It is an elective, not a required course, so those who want to take it can and those who dont can leave it alone.

they will strike it down. Force Christianity in the private sector, but not the public.

What would be nice for all of us, Christian or otherwise, is that from all of this a clear definition of how the seperation of church and state works happens. However I am not holding my breath.

Be it a public school or not...they could always use private money for that class...those that want it can donate...those that don't want it don't have to.

i disagree that it will be shot down. think about it; philosophy classes teach about all different outlooks and our school even has a world religions class. you can educate people without advocating one belief system over another.
