Has anyone on storm2k had cash refused for goods or services and a check or credit card requested instead???????????? I can't understand this. I really can't. Why would someone refuse cash and request a check? It just doesn't make sense.

It happened to me at Neiman Marcus. They didnt have the facilities to handle cash.

Seriously? That is crazy. Any store should be set up to handle cash!

Having said that, I work in a law office, and we finally had to start keeping some change (1's, 5's and 10's) on hand for that occasional client who wants to pay cash - 99.9% of our bills are paid by check and I was caught off guard a few times by people needing change.

snicker...a lady at Saks Fifth Avenue once told me that money was dirty and they'd rather not touch it.

We had the exact amount and they wanted a check. I just don't get it. This was a diagnostic laboratory for blood work.

sometimes, it's a security issue. they dont want to deal with accountability for cash, i.e. perhaps they're worried about sticky fingers.

I hadn't thought of this. Your probably right.

and i just read something this weekend about paying with a fingerprint!! Biometrics is pretty scary stuff.

Security. It's tough for an employee or a burglar to do anything with a check or with credit card purchases. I hardly ever use cash anymore as a customer anyway so I don't mind.

I would not be surprised to see paper currency obsolete in the next 25yrs. Could even be sooner than that.

By paying cash you effectively pay 1-2% extra for everything you buy by giving up credit card rewards of variosu types. You're probably right that this effect will render cash mostly obsolete in a decade or two.

Only problem G is the fact that the vast majority of Americans gain nothing with the credit card rewards. They lose it all by keeping a high debt ratio and paying the finance charges.

That is very true. It takes discipline to actually reap the rewards without paying far more than they're worth, but they're definitely available. Between credit card rewards and 0% cash advances sitting in my ING account, I make a tidy sum of money off of credit card banks every year though.

My Mobile Home Park has not accepted cash for lot rent for years-seems they had a bit of a problem with till dipping.

Debit/ATM card . .. I use it for most purchases under $25.00 and gas. Over $25.00, I'll write a check or use the credit card. I keep cash and change in my purse for emergencies and the soda machine at work.

The only thing I'll miss about no coin/paper if we do get to that point, is Vegas. Over the last few years not only Vegas but the other gaming areas we go to have gone more and more to a ticket system. Even though I'm strictly a table player, there is something about not hearing the coins dropping.

I can honestly say that I have never had anyone refuse cash from me - I guess
I'd have that "dear-caught-in-the-headlights" look for a few seconds! I'm used to
paying cash for most things, but, I occasionally use my debit card - a few paper
mail bills, I do write a check, but, each new box of checks lasts me almost four
months!

4 months? Two books of checks (80 checks) will last me a couple of years!

Guess I'm a dying breed..no credit cards, no debit cards, no checking account..if I don't have the cash I don't buy it

Me too. I don't buy anything if I don't already have the money for it. However, I do enjoy the effective discount of using a credit card, plus the extra interest from elaving the money in my ING Direct account right up until it's time to to pay the bill.
