I have a Olds cutlass with the 3.4DOHC and it has 150,000 miles. When I was driving to my fathers house the car just stop, cut off.I was going 39mph so that just gave me enough to put it off the road.I try start it again and its sounds like the starter is working or the car is not getting the gas??I thought it is the coils, but I hope its not the timing "jumped".Any opinion welcome. Thanks

Sounds like what happened to my Jeep recently and that was the fuel pump.

Yes it does sound like a fuel pump. However the last time that happened to me, it was a relay that controls the fuel pump, and not the fuel pump itself. You'll have to get it towed to a shop you trust and let them diagnose it.

Sounds like the fuel pump to me also. But if the fuel pump has a gas filter installed, have them check that also. I had a problem like that in a 77 Grand Marquis that turned out to be the fuel filter was clogged up.

What year model is your car. The problem is probably something simple like a fuel filter or pump but if it is a computer controlled engine there is a possiblity of a malfunction there. It could have also jumped time but simply driving at a steady speed does not usually cause a car to jump time. It usually happens during hard acceleration.

Have you checked into any automotive forums? I was able to get wiring diagrams from another member at no cost that way. And I fixed my vehicle for $65 in 30 minutes vs. $500 at the dealer....
Here's one just to try:

Everything in my mind as you all said is pointing towards the fuel pump or perhaps a bad fuel filter as the cause of the problem. Hopefully the problem is resolved.

One other thing, if it has a timing belt, the belt may have broke. That will kill the engine immediately. It will crank over but not start. Did the check engine light come on?

I talked to a repair guy that I take my cars to and he is 99.9999999%sure it is the timing belt. The bad news is with the 3.4DOHC is when the belt brakes so does the engine!!!!Its $350 to replace the belt, but $2000 to fix the motor!!!!!!!!!
I have already found another car for $1500 and it has 83000 miles on the dash!!!I also did a Carfax on the car and it came out find.

Sorry to hear that, sounds like the belt was never replaced. With this new car you found, if it has a timing belt, get it replaced. Most timing belts get replaced at 60k to 90k miles.
