16 year old boy and a 14 year old boy were injured Tuesday afternoon when a homemade bomb exploded behind a home (seen here).
The incident happened on Gardnerville Road in the Town of Leray, in northern Jefferson County.
The two boys were making a homemade bomb with directions they found on the internet, according to Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies.
The teens used a co2 cartridge and gunpowder, and lit the gunpowder.
It exploded, leaving the 16 year old with what were described as severe hand injuries.
Deputies at the scene said the 16 year old was at risk to lose fingers.
The 16 year old and the 14 year old were taken to Samaritan Medical Center. The 16 year old was later moved to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse. He's in stable condition.
The 14 year old had a large cut to his head.
Deputies found shotgun shells that had been emptied for gunpowder, and part of a finger.
There were no adults at the house and the 16 year old was babysitting for a two year old, who was inside the home when the bomb went off, deputies said.
