iPod or Walkman?

Hey there guys, I was just wondering if I could have a little advice. I'm considering buying a new mp3 player, and I've whittled down my options to the video iPod and the new Sony Walkman. The credentials all look very impressive, but I was just wondering if anybody on here owns either of them, and if so whether they could please give me any advice or opinion on the device. Thanks! :)

Everyone says Ipod, so I would assume Ipod is better. But what's the difference between them?

I guess I'm out of date with my MP3 player and I really haven't looked into anything else. What am I missing?

Ipod goes from 512MB Shuffle to 2GB Nano up to the 60GB Photo (I have the 6GB mini which is out of production).

most MP3 players have up to 512MB....

I would highly suggest the Ipod (the choice is up to you). You pretty much have the freedoms you don't have with a normal mp3 player.

I-Pod. You can even watch videos on the newer ones. I use mine as a data storage device (mini-hard-drive...bigger thumb drive so to speak) as well as carrying around my tunes.

OK, I have a question, because I'm considering getting one for my son's upcoming birthday since his MP3 just quit working.

I'm rather numb about what they're capable of. He has a large library of CDs and music already downloaded on his desktop. If he gets an iPod, can he download the music he already has onto it? Or is he limited to only downloading from a site like iTunes?

I know it's not a choice you listed, but MyFi from XM

...but if I had to choose, I would go with iPod.

He can load mp3s, AACs files and the DRM protected iTunes files. He cannot load onto the iPod -- .ogg files, wma files (Windows Media player files), .ram (Realplayer),.wav files and Windows media DRM protected files. I-tunes can convert non-DRM wma files to mp3 or .aac files.

James I think your decision should be based on where you decide to buy music that will be going on the mp3 player.

If you want to buy from I-tunes == then the iPod is your choice. I-tunes uses its own DRM (digital right management) scheme that is tied to the iPod. Though, they do play non-protected mp3s and .aac files

If you plan on buying from Yahoo Music, Napster, or Rhapsody, then the Sony. I believe the files from Yahoo, Napster or Rhapsody are DRM-protected Window Media files that won't play on the iPod.

If you plan on buying non-DRM protected music, d/l your music from less than "legal" sources or ripping from your CDs, then it doesn't matter (though I would still choose the iPod.)

I forgot to add that I own a 60G iPod (4th gen; non-video)that is currently holding 10% I-tunes music files, 10% protected AAC files (Audible.com audiobooks) and 80% non-DRM protected mp3s from various sources (podcasts, music ripped from CDs and music from other "sources"). I had an iPod before I-Tunes, Yahoo, Rhapsody and Napster (the legal one, not the other one), so I'll admit where are I was going to download/buy legal music wasn't an issue.
