No, it's not about drinking green beer and cooking out. Besides, who
grills Irish stew and cabbage anyway?
Take it from someone named Shawn -- It's a time for those of Irish descent to celebrate their ancestry. It started in Boston in 1737 by Irish immigrants as a Catholic feast day to celebrate/observe the death of St. Patrick who died on March 17, 461 AD. It became a day to show strength and unity among the Irish immigrants in the northeast after the potato famine hit and many were discriminated against in regards to employment and housing. They banded together and marched through the streets -- a tradition which later became the parades we see today.
If March 17 falls on a Sunday, the Catholic church calendars will mark the observation day as the Monday following 3/17. And if it falls during a Holy Week, they move it to the Monday following that week.
It also happens to be one of the few (if only) days that a Catholic will/might break Lenten abstinence or fasting and eat meat.

It's a day of Parades and celebration in Toronto this Sunday as the annual St Patrick's Day Parade is scheduled.
It's fun to be Irish for a day.

Yep I have a full on Irish name too.......Kelly O'Brien, and my grandpa is full blood Irish. But I have to be honest I don't celebrate it the way I probably should.
It is a night to go out and drink, back in the days before kids. Now its just a night at home to drink.

It's not St. Patrick's Day until tomorrow. This thread is 849 minutes early.
I do nothing to celebrate except wear green so I don't get injured by excessive pinching.

I am almost of pure cajun decent plus a little Spanish on my mothers side. However, my dad's side is not from SE LA and I am of Irish decent of that side of the family. I put a scarf around my yorkie Chloe's neck. It has green clovers all over it. I guess I will just get pinched tomorrow since I have to work. Because at work we have to wear a uniform. It has to be a black or white polo shirt with a collar and either black or khaki dress pants. And I don't even have anything green to pin on my shirt. Maybe my mom might have something I can borrow though.

Since I work in a middle school cafeteria now, I wanted to wear my green today. So I picked up a Lands' End green and white striped turtleneck from a consignment shop, @ only $2.50. Then a baseball hat with a green bill, green button on top, white elsewhere, @ only $1. Next a lightup shamrock pin from Hallmark, @ $3. All in all my outfit totaled under $7. Not bad! Of course my HS age daughter thinks I'm corny-corny. Spoken from the girl going off to school wearing her Flogging Molly T and her shamrock sox from Target. Sure, I'm the corny one.....LOL
No drinking for me today. Making the long drive down to my oldest daughter's campus, her spring break begins today.
Happy drinking to those that can today!
