San Diego NCAA arena evacuated on bomb scare
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Police evacuated a San Diego college arena on Thursday, hours before a first-round NCAA championship basketball game, after a bomb-sniffing dog signaled a potential problem at a hot dog stand.
Cox Arena at San Diego State University was cleared while police tried to determine if there was an explosive device in the hot dog stand, college spokesman Jack Beresford said.
He said it was not immediately clear how many people were inside the building at the time but that the teams had not yet arrived.
"A bomb-sniffing dog noticed something in a hot dog cart," Beresford said. "They got a hit on something that was in the cart itself.

"The arena for the first-round NCAA men's tournament game between Alabama and Marquette was temporarily evacuated Thursday after bomb-sniffing dogs found a suspicious package about two hours before tipoff.
The dogs detected the package inside a 4-by-6-inch condiment container in a vendor cart outside Cox Arena at San Diego State University. A bomb robot was sent to the scene, FBI spokeswoman Jan Caldwell said."

Authorities say it is now safe to go inside the SDSU Cox Arena after it was evacuated this morning when a bomb-sniffing dog detected something suspicious in the building, 10News reported.
The animal smelled the substance in or near a food cart at the San Diego State University stadium at about 9:15 a.m., according to authorities.
Authorities cleared everyone out of the arena to allow explosives experts to investigate.
Thousands of basketball fans waited outside the building for about an hour.
The arena will host four games today as part of the NCAA men's basketball championship tournament. The first game was scheduled to begin at 11:40 a.m., with Marquette taking on Alabama.
UCLA is scheduled to play its first-round game of the tournament at about 2 p.m., taking on Belmont.
