Songs that everyone loves

Now that I have my new toy (my new Dell with Windows XP Media Edition) and Itunes, I'm trying to think of songs that I should purchase and download. I have quite a few already and then there are some that I can't find ("They Don't Know" by Tracey Ullman is my absolute favorite one-hit wonder from the 80's and it's not available).

I need suggestions -- what are some songs that have universal appeal? In other words, don't tell me your favorite song because it might be some obscure something-or-other that I won't recognize (no offense, but we all have different tastes in music, movies, etc.). You guys probably wouldn't recognize all my faves either.

What are some songs that anyone could play at a party or get-together that everyone would recognize and enjoy -- songs that almost everyone probably has in their collection, whether they'll admit it or not? Any genre, any artist - rock, country, soundtrack, R&B, love songs, etc.

Here's my library so far (don't laugh!). It includes songs I've uploaded from CD so I can play them on the playlist or so I can get rid of the CD since I only like one or two songs on it. Obviously, these don't all have universal appeal...because they're on MY playlist. :P

"Crying" by Roy Orbison? Good one...I'll keep this thread bookmarked for the list. :) "I Will Survive" - also a good one. "All By Myself" - not one of my faves (kind of sad), but still a classic I suppose.

Some good stuff there ...

How about some Bowie ... say "Changes" or "American Girl" or maybe "Let's Dance" (or more obscurely "Cat People" - love that song

And you've got to add some Billy Joel (just saw the stage production of "Movin' Out" last month - fantastic)

Ummm ... Peter Gabriel? ... Phil Collins? ... The Pretenders?

Sheesh ... I'm dating myself ... I always swore I was never going to turn into one of those people who listens to oldies.

Yup, I have almost every Billy Joel CD, including a compilation of his songs with the Hassles and Attila. Just haven't uploaded them.

Changes and maybe Fame, possibly Under Pressure - all might be good Bowie songs.

Of course! Gotta get Sledgehammer!

Phil Collins -- good suggestion also. I'll leave out "I Wish It Would Rain Down" although it's a good weather song. :) "Sussudio" and "You Can't Hurry Love" are two definites.

"The Devil Went Down to Georgia" - Charlie Daniels Band :)

How about Cheap Trick? Their songs are insanely catchy, yet they don't irritate me for some reason.

Yup, I have TDWDTG on the Coyote Ugly Soundtrack. I should upload that one also. :)

Cheap Trick...reminds me of the other guys I used to get mixed up with them - Supertramp. :) I'll look those up too.

How about something from these classic performers? My song choices are in brackets.

--Bruce Springsteen ["Thunder Road" or "Born to Run"]
--Steely Dan ["My Old School" or "Black Friday"]
--Cat Stevens ["Oh, Very Young" (that's the opening phrase, maybe not the title) or "Hard-
Headed Woman"]
--Louis Armstrong [(What a) Wonderful World"]
--Crosby,Stills,Nash,& Young ["Teach Your Children"]
--The Mamas and the Papas ["This Is Dedicated (to the One I Love)"]
--The Beatles ["With Love From Me to You"]
--Simon & Garfunkle ["America"]
--Janis Joplin ["Piece of My Heart"]
--a Beethoven symphony [7th] and a Rossini overture ["William Tell"]

I'm going to stop there or I'll be up far too late tonight....

P.S. For my daughter's wedding in 2004, she and I filled 6 CDs between the two of us with dinner, dancing, and special (intro of wedding party, cake-cutting, bouquet-tossing, etc.) music for the DJ to add to his selections and guest requests. Our choices ranged from our favorite oldies to contemporary hits. I still listen to those CDs frequently!
