When you look in a mirror, why is left and right reversed, but up and down are not?

It's because left and right are relatively defined, while up and down are not. Left and right are defined relative to up/down and forward/back. What a mirror does is flip the forward/back axis (a result of the fact that the mirror actually changes the direction of light) and thus left/right are flipped as well. If you put a mirror on the floor, up/down will be flipped and so will left/right.

Well WM, I guess you ARE so smart....
Here's something that goes along with that. If you put a sticker or decal in the rear window of your car so that it can be read from behind the car, and from inside the car you look out the rear window, it looks backwards. But if you look in the rear view mirror, it looks right! It's magic I tell you.
