Do you put on your walking shoes at least once a week, head out the door and get in a good amount of required walking?

I am going to start this weekend walking down to the beach each Saturday and Sunday morning.

I should have made this a priority a long time ago.

We bought a treadmill over 5 years ago. That's my preferred method for speed walking. My husband prefers walking outside but I've twisted my ankles so many times, fracturing one once, that the treadmill is much safer for this major klutz. I miss curbs and always seem to find the sidewalk cracks. Always!

But walking shoes are a must - I wear a pair of New Balance. Ugly, wide things but that make my size 8 feet look huge but they are very comfortable.

I feel my very best when I:

- exercise in place on the floor for 30 minutes (Pilates type exercises)
- walk on the treadmill daily for 30 minutes

and

- walk the dog for what I call my bonus walk (she stops too much to get a good pace going)

Mary

PS - I will add that I faithfully did all of the above for a 2 year period and I swore my walks gave me more energy than coffee ever did. Takes about 2 weeks to see that benefit.

Well, I have lived in sandals since living here. I do not own a good pair of walking shoes. We have a couple good athletic shops up town here, so I will hit them and look for a good sale. I just have never been comfortable wearing a shoe where my toes were covered and I have never had any problem walking anywhere in sandals. I know they are not good for walking, so I will hit the stores and find a great pair on sale. They are always on sale. My husband has diabetes and he already has a good pair.

I only paid $35 to $40 for mine. At a shoe outlet store, not full retail. I never pay full retail prices! They're very comfortable.

I prefer my simple Keds for summer outfits and sandals for a few capri's. The Keds are not comfortable for major walking. Those ugly New Balance ones are though.

Just look for a pair on sale. There are many, many walking shoe brands out there. Sure you can spend big $ on them, I just tried to find a pair for under $50 (my cut off).

I've had them for about 5 years too.

I don't put on my tennis shoes, I wear my flops. lol. But I used to walk to and from the babies school, but now I ride her on my bike. Me and my mom started walking every morning after I drop her off at school since my moms house is across the street. We used to just sit around and chit chat, but now we walk and talk. 8-)

Good for you, I am sure you feel better just taking that short walk.

I've been doing some long walks since I started 7th grade.

I wish I could say the same for my best friend diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy.

Yep, between the bike rides and walking it does feel good. I used to be an athletic type before kids and I am trying to work my way back. Maybe get back into sports a little later. The bike rides equal about 4 miles and we walk about 1 mile and are working up to 3, its been a while since my mom has walked so she needs to work up slowly and get back in the swing of things.

I'll go for a walk with my iPod to the top of my village and back now and again, that's more of a winter route, because being that there are a lot of fields around here it tends to turn into a bog in the wet weather. During the summer months though (starting quite soon actually) I go for a walk around the golf course a few houses down the road from my house. There's a public footpath that runs all the way around the outside, and it's really nice on a summer evening to go through all the neatly kept greens and the bridges over the stream that runs through it. Overall it runs to a trip of about two miles, so it's just about right. :)

Well James - you DO still exist :D

Like Mary, I prefer my treadmill. In fact, I LOVE my treadmill. I use it an hour in the mornings before work (6% incline at 3.5 mph). I bought a pair of walking shoes and "Walk Fit" inserts. I have problems with my right foot - the bone has slipped out of the joint from doing high-impact aerobics for so long.

I also do Pilate's in the afternoons, about 30 minutes. I find Pilate's help me to relax. Nice way to wind down in the afternoon

Sunny, you are the first person here I have heard of who does Pilates. My sis is obsessed with them. She does them every day. She does yoga too. I do not do anything, I have to get my butt started.....

I tried YOGA and enjoyed it - but it was too rough on my neck so I gave it up. I LOVE Pilate's though. I use Stott Pilate's. I have the Fitness Circle and I also do the Band Workout. I hope to one day, when I have the room, get a Reformer :D

Yea, I'm still around, lol. It's been such a hectic year with all of the coursework and exam preparation, but I finish school for ever in four weeks, and get a 4 month summer holiday, so that will allow for some more time on here and also the chance to get out and about, get some exercise and whatnot.

my dog insists on dragging me around for 30 minutes twice a day. she's getting to be quite a powerhouse, so it's no leisurely stroll. we walk down to the beach, she splashes around and rolls in the sand until she's an absolute mess and we walk home....

Janice my girlfriend and I decided that we are going to walk on the beach at least 3 days per week. It would give me more excersize than i get right now.

Yes, John and I are going to start this weekend. He has diabetes and he just got back his chest xray which indicates he has an enlarged heart. His doctor is not that concerned and is treating him, but says he needs to get as much exercise as he can. So we will be walking a lot. We are just 3 blocks from the ocean. I guess exercise is good for everything.

I don't get that much walking in, but running - oh, I get plenty! Usually at least 40 miles/week, enough to keep my endurance up and speed down. Along with a little core work and lifting twice a week, I stay pretty well in shape. Now the walking I do get in always feels wonderful, but pretty much anything will right after a long run.
