More than three years after the last "Star Trek" movie crashed at the box office, the venerable sci-fi franchise is being revived by the director of the upcoming "Mission: Impossible" sequel, Daily Variety reported in its Friday edition.

The as-yet-untitled "Star Trek" feature, the 11th since 1979, is aiming for a fall 2008 release through Paramount Pictures, the Viacom Inc. unit looking to restore its box-office luster under new management, the trade paper said.

The project will be directed by J.J. Abrams, whose Tom Cruise vehicle "Mission: Impossible III" will be released by Paramount on May 5. Abrams, famed for producing the TV shows "Alias" and "Lost," will also help write and produce.

Daily Variety said the action would center on the early days of "Star Trek" characters James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and first outer-space mission.

The paper described "Star Trek" as Hollywood's most durable performer after James Bond, spawning 10 features that have grossed more than $1 billion and 726 TV episodes from six series.

The 10th film, "Star Trek: Nemesis," bombed at the box office on its December 2002 release, earning just $43 million in North America. Last year, Viacom-owned broadcast network UPN pulled the plug on the low-rated series "Star Trek: Enterprise" following a four-season run.

As long as they leave Tom Cruise, John Revolting, Kelly McGuinness (intentional misspelling) and all the other Scientologists off the bridge of the "NCC-1701G Enterprise", I'l watch it.

I loved the original Star Trek tv and movies but didn't care for any of the sequels. I look forward to seeing this movie since it concerns Kirk and Spock.

Star Trek never interested me, but Star Wars is something to talk about.

The only "Star Trek" film I like was "First Contact".

Same here! I just never got into Star Trek, I've watched a few original episodes but it never grabbed my attention. Enough so I had to watch each week. But I respect that it has a diehard following!

One of my daughter's friends dad and I talked about Star Wars last year. He's the reason I finally watched SW I, II and III. Prior to that I couldn't bring myself to learn more about Darth Vader.

But the funny thing was I thought his daughter would have been dying, of embarrassment b/c her dad and her friend's mom were discussing Star Wars. For a long time I might add. She just laughed and said - my dad's just a nerd, at one time he could even speak Klingon! Now bear with me, that's probably not spelled right. So in my foyer he attempted to speak it. Later my daughter Laura and I cracked up, she said I like her dad mom! If I had wanted to know more about Star Trek, he would have educated me. I know it!

So enjoy it, Star Trek fans.

Star Trek is awesome, my 16 y/o son has turned into quite a Trekkie, which probably qualifies him as a bonified "nerd".

Some of the stories and plots on The Next Generation were fantastic. And it's nice to glimpse into what the future may hold, where we've overcome war, poverty, racism, etc.
