This morning I went outside to my backyard and there were a few small patches of blackened grass. One little patch looked like grass had been burned away. I didn't hear anything overnight. There were thunderstorms nearby but we didn't get any, though it is overcast.WTH happened?

God, I don't think I have ever notice blackened grass before. Could the grass have had some kind of fungus you were unaware of and when wet, turned black?

Nope.I was doing some work in the backyRD yesterday. No black grass. It looks like maybe sparks from something could have caused it. Its been rainy here for awhile and that may be why there was no large grass fire. Never seen this kind of thing before.

Firecrackers?? A friend had a patch of blackened grass and I looked up and the tree above was scorched. She never heard a thing. Some kids set off firecrackers, and a neighbor called the fire department.

Maybe someone is throwing cigarettes or cigars in the yard and the area is getting burnt till it goes out.

I doubt it's any kind of fungus, although spring and fall are typical times of the year for it to show up in Texas lawns. Brown patch shows up as an irregular circle of brown, sometimes with green in the middle. Take-all patch just wipes out everything, but again, that's brown, not black.

The only time I've seen blackening is either from burning, or accidentally spilling lawn acidifier without watering it into the grass. Burns the crap out of it, but what grows back is green, green green!

My grandma found a patch of blackened grass, it was still burning in part of it, and found out a squirrel got zapped on the powerline, fell and started a fire there...
