Health Issues

Do you have health issues that concern you?

This is not for what you have had or been treated for, but things that your family or parents had and died and you are concern about it.

My grandmother died of alzheimers. I am fine so far, but find I am doing some things I am concerned about. I do what all people do, go to the kitchen for something and when I get there, forgot what I was looking for. But I have found that I put stuff where it does not go. The other day, I found a can of peas in the frig...

My real father and son both died of cancer.

I get my yearly chest xray (cause I smoked 40 years), and my pap smear and mamo. I get a complete lab work done once a year and they turn out great. But what about small cancer tumors, etc. that cannot be detected by those exams and tests?

Also, my real father who died of cancer, died fairly young. It was his mother who had alzheimers. So, who know if he had early stages of alzheimers that was not detected?

Had an aunt and uncle that died from colon cancer. Had one colonoscopy (pooper snooper  ) a couple of years ago and am due for another in 2009. Last one I had they found some benign polyps which puts me at even higher risk. Heart disease also runs on my dads side of the family.

Yes, when they find something, best get it checked often.

Heart disease, high blood pressure, breast cancer, glaucoma run in my family. I've become best friends with my internist.

I do too, Mama..... when I get a new prescription, I check out the company that makes it and read all I can on it.

If I spot anything funny on my body, I immediately get it checked too. Something new can just be letting you know that maybe something has been in you awhile.

Like cancer. You do not just get it. It is in you awhile before being detected.

Cancer runs very high in my family. Colon cancer runs very high. My grandmother died from colon cancer in 2002. Not long before, my grandmother's brother also died of colon cancer. And my paternal great-grandfather died of colon cancer. My paternal grandfather had polyps removed and they were pre-cancerous. I have pretty bad IBS and even though it does not cause cancer, I worry constantly.

Diabetes runs high, too. It runs high on both sides of the family. I got tested a couple of times and both negative. My maternal grandfather has diabetes. And my great-grandmother died of it. And my paternal grandmother has it pretty bad, too.

I also think I have inherited another disorder that comes from both of my grandmothers. Both maternal and paternal. Panic disorder and bi-polar. I think mine is mild because I am not on medication anymore. But, I switch back and forth between depression and manic. But, a lot of people don't notice. I also have ADD diagnosed in 8th grade which makes it hard for me to stay focus. My paternal grandmother suffers from depression so bad that she has to have electric shock therapy. And my maternal grandmother had severe depression at times and had a few nervous breakdowns.

My Dad died at 52 of leukemia. There is a family history on my Mom's side of diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.

I haven't been to a doctor (other than my dentist) in about 15 years. Won't go, don't do doctors.

cajungal - IBS and panic disorder are pretty commonly found together. I don't know why, by I don't actually know anyone with IBS that doesn't have (or didn't used to have) panic attacks.

Cancer and heart attacks seem to be the big killers amongst the previous generations of my family.

Skin cancer, liver cancer, pancriatic cancer, stomach cancer, breast cancer. My uncles and their father.

Heart attacks and strokes, both sides of the family.

Minor stuff - allergies and asthma.

Got diagnosed about 2 years ago with ADD. I actually self diagnosed myself and presented the symptoms to my doctor who agreed with me. I WONT do meds; I function pretty well for the most part but have some difficulty concentrating and staying focused at times, even with the things I enjoy.

IBS can be triggered by stress, so anyone with anxiety or depression issues can be at risk. I have IBS and depression. I believe that the IBS runs on my father's side of the family. My mother's sister died at 56 of lung cancer. My grandmother had breast cancer in her 70's and my three cousins (all siblings) on my father's side have juvenile diabetes. My father's father also had a stroke and heart attack but did live for many years afterward.

A mixed bag of strokes, cancer, congestive heart failure, and a genetic form of cirrhosis of the liver which I believe was caused by excess iron in the blood.

Yes, also my mom died of a heart attack. All her sisters and one brother died of cancer and she never once had it, strange? So, it doesn't necessarily mean you will get cancer too.

Also, when my grandmother, who was 82 when she died had alzheimers, my real father died of cancer at 61.

So, when we have alzheimers in our families and members die early, like in their 60's or so, how do we know they did not have early forms of alzheimers too which was to early to really detect?

As long as I take care of myself, my family history says that I'll die of a stroke or a heart attack in my 80's. I can deal with that.

Hmm. That could happen. Her family is hard on husbands that marry into the family. According to her family history, I'll become an alcoholic and die young, get divorced, or otherwise get out of the picture prematurely.

I'll hold on to my family history. I'm too stubborn and contrary to sucumb to that fate.
