Well, it will only be time when some great virus, etc. hits us all. It has been going on since the beginning of man. Natures way of cleaning house. This is one area that nature is in control. We can do our best to protect ourselves, but as we all know, nature prevails.

I'm not scared of it. It's only fatal in 5% of the cases, correct?

Worrying is not going to do us any good. Let's just live each day to the fullest.

if its highly contageous, only thing to do to prevent it from entering the USA is a total border closure.

Dont care if it makes us look "evil", but if this has any potential to wipe out as many as the 1918 outbreak... time to save our fellow Americans

Well, with airplanes and cruise ships, hard to keep the people out.

The mortality rate is 50%, not 5%.

if ther eis human to human, and the death toll is 50%, DO NOT ALLOW INT'L SHIPS OR PLANES

I dont care if this make us look bad in the eyes of the rest of the world. All I care about is protecting our country

I see what you mean Derek, makes sense. But it will never happen. Planes and ships are big business and canceling all air and ships would bankrupt the country. Think of the jobs lost and the deals not being made. Big business lives on planes.

What scares me is that the US never tells us anything. Everything is a big secret. It could probably be here now and it is being kept a secret while they figure out what to do before the big panic.

Our economy, along with the world's economy would implode within 6 months if we did such a thing, and anarchy would raise it's head doing far more damage than ANY bird-flu.

some things are more important than the ecomony (and this from someone who is a blackbody for money... see blackbody radiation for a better example).

tens of millions of people is one of those things. The economy willl recover, but if we lose 10's of millions, our economy also suffers and we have a labor shortage

if it's transmitted by birds, then closing the borders does nothing.

disease knows no borders, regardless if they're open or not.

and yes the mortality rate in reported cases is 50% but the sample set is very, very small. there may be many more unreporeted cases of people who got sick but just thought it was a cold.

HI All,
I would suggest that you check out http://www.fluwiki.com or http://www.avianflutalk.com for some great info about the avian flu.

Some of the comments on this thread speak to a need to educate yourselves on this issue. I am not saying this to be ugly or anything but this is a serious issue. I had to be educated when I started posting on S2K so this is what I mean.

Facts about Bird Flu.
overall mortality rate about 56%\
Indonesian mortality rate currently 78%
Seroprevelance tests so far do not support the idea of large numbers of mild infections. A human to human pandemic COULD cause severe and long lasting disruptions to our way of life. It is currently not believed to be efficient Human to Human transmission but the current cluster in Indonesia could very well be H2H with a chain of at least 3 people. Just like hurricanes this is something that we should prepare for.

What I am babbling about is the need for everyone to research and don't go by Main stream media sound bites. Please find out about this very real and very scary threat for yourself. Do not take anyones word for anything educate yourself.
I apologize but the developments over the last few days kinda have me rattled.

Thank you so much for the great information. I am concerned of course. I just don't know what we can do about it. Are we prepared to handle the situation. What about medication and panic. This is scary. I am not going to worry about it tho. When the time comes, I will have to do what I am told to do. I just hope those in charge give us amply notice and are honest with us. And, I hope they are doing everything to stockpile any type of medication they think they can get. All we can do is wait and do what we are told. Till then, I will live my life and hope for the best. Also what concerns me is what they know and what they may not be telling us.

thanks, and I echo janice's statement

life's too short for gloom and doom. for a hurricane i'll up and leave if i'm in an area that needs to be evac'ed but for a possible plague that might not even go global, i can't be constantly worried about it. i'd never sleep.

Give some time to thinking about our Just In Time delivery system for all supplies. What happens if or when large numbers of people are sick or too afraid to work. Will Wally world have the food/supplies we need to live? My concern is not about the disease as such, If you catch it then you either live or die and this is really out of our hands, but If I am forced to stay home for any extended period will I have food and water? It is something to think about. Here in La. in the aftermath of Katrina and Rita the store shelves were very short for weeks afterwards and missing alot of stock for several months. This disruption though terrible was localized, what about supply disruptions that are widespread.

See http://www.pandemicflu.gov for prep guidelines.
Tim

The time to prepare ourselves is now not when faced with this disease.

Has anyone here asked their doctors if they have medication or plan on getting it or what their plan of action will be?

I have not, but I will the next time I go in.

As am I, if it's time to go, it's time to go, nothing will change that and I am not afraid.
