There are political reasons why the minimum wage will not go up anytime soon so they can't be discussed here (but look to the Southern Border for your answer).

It went up here not long ago.
If you are under 18 in Ontario it's $7.25, and if you are over 18 it's $8.00

Some States have raised it here but by large it hasn't changed. There is a downward pressure on wages in the US because of a large influx of cheap labor.

The mininum wage here in Louisiana is still at only $5.15 an hour. Nobody can live off that kind of money. I can see if you are still in school and you just need a part time job just for gas and stuff. But, there is no way possible you can live off of mininum wage alone.

Take a look at this

This chart shows that there is no wages for LA or SC where I live so I guess that means that they can hire people at a $1 a hour?

That's ridiculous. Minimum wage here is $6.50, however I refuse to work for that kind of money. $7 is the minimum I would work for, and it better be a pretty easy job too. With today's gas prices and such, $5.15 an hour really won't cut it.

You have a problem then Scorpion because the people who WILL work for 6.50/hr (or less) and thus keep you from getting a job are headed your way via Cochise County Arizona right now as I speak.

Yeah, come to think of it, most of my friends are making $8.50-$10 an hour. They are in school too. I guess that has to do with rising costs of everything in Waterloo. Average home costs $210,000 and have fun finding a one room apartment under $900/month. This city is getting too expensive for teenagers and young adults.

$5.15 still in Philly (but Home Depot starts you off at either $9 or $10/hour and I know Walmart pays $7.50/hr)

They have to pay the minimum federal standard of $5.15.
Raising the minimum wage wont help. The businesses that are forced to pay the higher wages will simply raise their prices. The net effect of this no one currently making minimum wage will have any extra spending money but the WILL have a higher taxable income. So IMHO theres no benefit at all.

Yes, and I agree. As long as we continue allowing the illegals, etc. to work here, you can kiss the increase away. They will work for any wage and the employers and government knows that.

Without getting political, any increase in the minimum wages will be decided after the 2006 and 2008 elections.

Legally, the lowest wage that can be paid is $5.15/hr, however, those employers who pay their day laborers under the table in cash pay as low as $5/hr and get away with it. In the Construction Industry, wages have been really suppressed by the influx of illegals. Jobs that used to have a starting wage of $12/hr are now being done by illegals at $7-10/hr.

Can we lock this before it gets political? Not to be mean to the person who posted this, but these types of topics can get political FAST.

Of course it will....but rather than give my reasons, which are decidedly political, I'll leave it at that.
