I keep getting a dang error that says I need to run chkdsk/f. I have searched help and tried everything it says to do, but every time I restart my machine, it does nothing!!! I need to defrag and can't do that without running chkdsk/x which also does the /f thing.....HELP!

Oh one time it tried to do something as Windows was fixin to load and it said something so fast I couldn't read it before it was off the screen, something about something was already mounted. I have tried going into Safe Mode, I have tried going into just Command prompt and still can't get it to work. It says it will run it next time the computer is restarted, but it WONT do it.

I hope I can help you. Go to My Computer, left click your mouse, go to properties, and click tools, and then it will ask you to either scan for mistakes or defrag. It is probably going to tell you that you will have to restart your computer in order to scan. Just click yes to restart. See if this will help.

If that doesn't help have your tried system restore to a date when your computer was working. Make sure you have everything backed up on disk though.

you have to do that from the DOS prompt, have you done that? also, go to your XP help section and check the section about troubleshooting errors, it will give you a step by step of how to do the checkdisk. it has to be done at startup and looks like the blue screen of death (but it isnt).

try running this file too: Drwtsn32.exe

I use system restore all the time and it generally works great.....

I was going to recommend the system restore tool as well... cleared up a lot of my bugs.

Thanks everyone. I will try those things. I did go to the DOS prompt and type in chkdsk/f and a couple of other letters that it suggested and restarted my machine about 20 times, but it still wouldn't do it except that one time that it tried. If if doesn't work again, then I will have to do a restore.

We are moving to our NEW HOUSE or "substantial housing" as my husband calls it tomorrow, so maybe I will wait till I get up there. It's only about 15 miles north of here, but hey, it didn't get flooded with Katrina!!!!! and that is a plus anywhere in Pascagoula/Moss Point area.

Thanks again!

Mary
