Check out this site for unusual but not unheard of occurance. The same things happened up near Gainesville many, many years ago. I am told that what is now Payne's Prairie was once large enough that steamboats crossed it.

The people who live around Scott Lake eliminated the public access to this lake for the public and turned it into their private lake. Now that an act of nature has drained the lake, the cost to repair it will be very high. They want the public to help pay for it. I as one of the public who was refused access, feel that the public should not help bear the cost of the repairs. Bernie Little, owner of racing boat Miss Budwiser, and Beer Distributer lives at this lake and he can afford to pay for the repairs.

I'm curious was this a spring fed lake? If the sinkhole fill in won't the lake fill back up with rain water eventually? Mother nature does tend to repair itself occasionally. Sad to hear about the homes.

That's nuts!!

The home owners have hire a firm to work on fixing the sink-hole. Once the hole is plugged the lake will refill. They showed pictures last night of all the dead fish that got stranded. I bet that smells pretty good today in the 90 degree heat....

Cookiely, the lake was formed from a sinkhole many, many years ago. That is hw a lot of lakes here in Lakeland were formed. One Lake I know that wasn't is Lake Mirror . It is a man made lake. It will take a lot of rain to fill Scott Lake up again. It took the hurricanes we had last year to get Lake Hollingsworth back to normal levels. It looks like it will take another hurrican to fill Scott Lake back up.
