Hopedale, Ohio -- A gruesome discovery was made on a popular golf course after a dog was found viciously mutilated.

Owners found their pet decapitated, its body in the woods along train tracks behind the Castle Shannon Golf Course on State Route 151 in Hopedale.

The owner of the golf course found the remains of his pet, a Jack Russell Terrier named Bogey, near the clubhouse Monday.

"It's a tough picture and it keeps coming back in my mind daily," said Ralph Hamilton, the dog's owner.

Bogey's pictures line the walls inside the clubhouse, which also includes a tavern named after the dog.

Investigators are looking into the possibility that two local teens may be responsible for the killing, and are currently trying to locate the teens for questioning.

The possibility that teenagers may be responsible is particularly disturbing to some, because they say teens who would attack animals often end up eventually attacking other people.

Erin Monigold, an employee at the golf course, said, "Whether it's an animal or a person, where does it stop? What's going to stop them later in life from doing it to somebody else?"

Police are still trying to determine how exactly the dog was killed. One possibility is that the animal was decapitated with a sword. Police are also investigating if a passing train is to blame.

Hamilton said he believes that his dog's death was simply a vicious case of abuse.

The investigation is ongoing, and police have not yet determined the cause of death.

That is just sick...plain ol' sick.

Extremely disturbing. That poor dog and it's owner. I'd be so distraught, I wouldn't be able to sleep at night.

Here in the Cincinnati area, dogs are disappearing (in a community called Colerain Township). 2 smaller dogs (terrier types) and just yesterday a black lab (older, I want to say 11 or 13 years old). The owner of the lab said her dog would never just wander off and they showed her professionally installed back yard fence. Officials and pet owners think their dogs were stolen.

What I suspect and I hate to go here but in the past, dog fighting rings have taken family pets - for bait. That just breaks my heart.

Watch your pets closely! And I mean closely.

A month or so ago in the Ann Arbor, Mi area SEVERAL dogs....also coyotes, fox, cats....were found decapitated.

It was thought there was some form of "ritual" being played out. Haven't heard of any lately....but was quite unnerving at the time.


ALSO....a few years ago, I was walking out to our building with a couple students. They were discussing their boyfriends being at a dog fight the night before. DOGFIGHTS?? In our little town of Adrian?? Yup! Quite common too it seems. They are being done everywhere.

Guess where the "practice" animals come from???? Your community! There are regular patrols that go around and pick up stray dogs and cats that are used to "train" vicious dogs. I can hardly even imagine this.....but it is done.

One can learn a lot of things simply by listening to young people......p

Yep - this is where I believe in an eye for an eye. I don't care if it's teenagers or not. They do not need to be in society.

Petal - yes it is done. About a year ago I read an indepth article in Readers Digest. I sobbed reading it, it is just so cruel what they first do to the animals that fight - these dogs are chained to treadmills and forced to run. Forced to be vicious. After a fight if they're torn, ripped to shreds and bleeding, a so called Vet, staples them up - no novacaine, no numbing, just staples them up. So, so sad. Then the so called dog owners steal other gentle type breeds, for bait to train these already vicious dogs to fight more. The poor innocent dog is placed in the ring, can you imagine their sheer terror?

The final straw for me was what they do with these fighting dogs when they're no longer of service - they stand them up in a tub of water and electrocute them.

My God - these dog fighting owners and proprietors are not even human.

How can someone go to a dog fight and fight that type of entertainment enjoyable?

The world is just mad sometimes. That's why I try my best to create my own little Mayberry, right here at home. You've got to start somewhere!

I'm done but I just had to touch on that aspect of dog snatching Petal. You are sadly, correct. If you ever get a chance to read that RD's article, it will literally break your heart.

It is a proven fact, that once a person abuses/mutulates/kills an animal the next step is sexual abuse/domestic violence and eventually homicide! I studied this last semester in criminal theory...truly a sad situation

I've heard that as well - another reason why they shouldn't be a part of society anymore....

Just horrifying! This is coming from one who finds it hard to even kill an ant. But how can anyone think of, or want to, then actually do such a heinous crime. No right thinking person, be it teenager or adult, can do this out of their own free will unless under the influence of a drug.

It is a sad sad day in Hopedale Ohio and across the land .

I've golfed that course before. Nice sleepy area that you wouldn't guess would have any kind of violence. That's awful. Dennis, you're right, they should cut off their............................

That's how Jeffery Dahmer got his start... the perps in this deserve a similar fate... it's beyond sickening.

As to people who actually ENJOY watching two animals tear each other apart... they need to be committed... (won't say where I think that should be tho'...)

Police have determined that a dog found decapitated on a local golf course died as a result of a train accident.

Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla confirmed that a train accidentally struck Bogey, a dog which is known at the Castle Shannon Golf Course in Hopedale.

The dog's remains were found near train tracks behind the golf course.

It took them long enough to even mention that possibility. I'm glad at least it wasn't something more sinister.

Yeah I think that a dog would be smarter than to stand in front of an oncoming train. The sounds and vibrations would bw sure to send him running away from the scene... unless he was sick or deaf..

I agree that there are still alot of unanswered questions as to why he was on that track to begin with and why he didn't run.
