HAPPY CANADA DAY JULY 1!
Posted: Fri Jun 30, 2006 11:41 am
Canada Day is on Saturday July 1st 2006.
CANADA celebrates it's 139th Birthday this weekend.
On Canada Day, Canadians celebrate the day the British North America Act created the Canadian federal government on July 1, 1867. This date was originally celebrated as Dominion Day up until the year 1982, when an Act of Parliament changed it to Canada Day.
It honours the day that the British colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and the Province of Canada were united into one country, called the Dominion of Canada.
Much like July 4 celebrations in the USA, Canada celebrates this day with picnics and barbeques and fireworks. It is very much a family day.
Because of a quirk in the calendar this year, Canada Day falls on a Saturday, meaning that Monday July 3rd 2006 is an official Holiday, making this a long, holiday weekend across all of Canada.
Happy Canada Day to all Canadians everywhere.
