When you have run out of something at home and had to substitute for it before you made it to the store, what did you use?

Me... Kleenix for toilet paper
Toilet paper for kleenix
Liquid clothes soap for dish soap
Baking soda for toothpaste

Me... Kleenix for toilet paper - ditto!
Toilet paper for kleenix - ditto!
Liquid clothes soap for dish soap - I use liquid anti-bacterial soap for laundry detergent!
Baking soda for toothpaste - never thought of this one before. I have used it to brush the dog's teeth!

I sneak in decaf coffee if I'm low on regular ground coffee. I don't tell anyone either!
I've used plain yogurt in place of mayo for tuna salad before. It's an okay substitute.
I've used a few turnips if I was low on potatoes for mashed potatoes. The turnips give it a new taste!
Hand cream if I was out of facial moisturizer.

I've used paper towels for coffee filters before! Now we use a washable basket.

Windex is great for lots of things. Works great as a bee killer too. They get in and then hang out by the windows, and if you spray them with bug spray you get big streaks of bug spray on the window. Now, if you spray them with Windex, they drop almost instantly, and no smear of messy bug spray, just a little wipe with a paper towel on the window before picking up the dead bee and you have a clean window too! ( kills ants too )

we use vinegar instead of windex for windows. ammonia for bug bites.
condensed milk instead of coffee creamer. ground turkey or chicken instead of hamburger.

Thanks for the tip on bees, I get those in the house sometimes, 40-100 will die in the windowsills. Don't know how they get in, but sometimes I want to kill them while they are still buzzing the windows.

I'm not surprised Windex kills them, or anything else. Its main ingredient is ammonia. A paramedic told me that ammonia is comparable to a chemical weapon - extremely dangerous to the human nervous system if you breath the fumes. I've used it sparingly since!

Condensed mild for coffee creamer? I LOVE hearing someone else say this!! That's what I've used since moving to the tropics, because liquid creamers are rarely available, and fresh milk goes bad in 2-4 days in the fridge. I buy it by the case, so it's always on hand. Friends generally think I'm nuts for using it, but once you get used to the taste, it's good!

Whoops I think I boo-booed. It's not the sweetened milk I use, just the regular evaporated (which is condensed).

"Carnation" it's not a powder, it's liquid in a can.

Carnation does come in a powder form here. I remember my mom making carnation milk when we were out of regular milk....nasty stuff.

Sorry, I can often sound blunt when typing messages quickly, especially when my butt hurts and my eyes ache from working too many hours on the computer. Hope I didn't sound rude!! I didn't realize that Carnation made dry evaporated, guess I've just never seen it. I used to look for milk powder, one recipe I have actually calls for powdered milk. I guess they don't sell powder milk here because the bugs get in it. They seem to get in everything dry. (I even keep pasta in the freezer.) We do get that boxed milk that doesn't need refrigeration. But it's expensive and short-dated when it hits the shelves.

The other day I bought dried cranberries as substitute for raisins, since they were only 40cents more. They were very tasty on turkey sandwich with fresh red peppers, tomatoes, lettuce, mustard and honey!

condensed milk is sweetened, evaporated milk just has a reduced amount of water. powdered milk has never touched these lips. yuck!

and ANYTHING is a good substitute for raisins. i just cant eat them. my kid brother used to call them fly bodies and i havent been able to touch them since.

we had this weird milk in the Philippines that looked like it had pulp in it. i dont know what it was. we started buying real milk on the economy and it was wonderful.
