This has been reported for the last several days. Not only NORAD,but other military instalations in Calif, and Florida, too. Commanders say it is not routine, and that "We will protect the homeland".The Pentegon would not give any reason for the heightened alert

The fact that NK decided to launch their missiles on July 4th may have had something to do with it especially since Kim Il Crackpot might have wanted to send the big one our way to shake us up a bit. Fortunately, that one was a launch failure.

I wouldn't doubt that we are at a heightened state of alert at those military installations because of "crackpot" - great nickname Steve.

I don't think the status has changed around here and they usually mention it.

I haven't noticed any changes here at Fort Bragg, the headquarters of all things Army. Maybe Fox was jumping the gun a little bit...?

I haven't heard anything about it and I've followed the news closely for the past 2 days.
But I don't watch Fox much either.

It would make sense that NORAD would be at a heightened state of alert because they are watching for the potential of more missiles being test flighted from N. Korea.

Just because its isnt obvious doesnt mean our military is not in alert mode. Alot goes on behind the scenes at our bases that the average citizen doesnt see.

Yes, there is a lot the government is not telling us. The president said we should not worry and it was not a threat at this time for us.
How does he know. I am always afraid of what they DON'T tell us as not to cause panic.

Forgive me for a stupid question.. But lets say they wanted to try to launch a long range missile to the west coast and it succeeds.. how long would it take to get to the west coast?

About an hour from what I've heard.

That's not that long at all

But more than enough time to intercept it if we somehow knew it was coming..

i work at the largest air force base in the free world and our alert level didnt change. if you read the CNN version, not the Fox one, it was indeed NORAD who was put on alert. That's their job.
But whoever made the DEFCON statement, wow, we only went to DEFCON 3 for 9/11!

I thought so, but wanted to hear it from someone more reliable.
I also thought there was a difference between NORAD being on alert and our bases going on high alert.
