Boy I'm no fan of Microsoft, for sure, but this seems really excessive. Read the part about how they delivered all but one installment on time. Who is the next corporation to get astronomical fines from this court? Is the EU now becoming the new World Government?

Why are you no fan of Microsoft...Where would the world be today if they never exsisted?

I'm not bvigal, obviously, but I'm also no fan of Microsoft.

Where would the world be without them? Running on a more efficient and less expensive operating system with significantly fewer bugs.

Microsoft puts out bloated buggy software that is constantly at least one step behind the other OS options out there. At this point they operate on good marketing alone.

I wanted to add that I greatly respect Bill Gates as the world's most successful businessman, but Microsoft's product is junk.

I'd still be on a Mac if it wasn't for work and the fact that it's so expensive, or even Linux, Microsoft is junk, I'm gonna have to reformat and write zeros to my hd again, dang missing dll files and WinXP recovery didn't put them back...again, sigh

Well then I guessed I have been fooled..I knew nothing about computers untill windows came around...The only bugs I get are the ones that creep though on the net...I could not imagine a world without windows...

It's all successful fancy marketing. This is exactly why Windows is so pervasive, though they are slowly losing market share to Mac and Linux.

Those bugs you get through the net only affect you because Windows is such a crappy OS.

I know no one personally with Mac and Linux? Where are they losing market share?

In the home use market, Mac and Linux together only represent about 8% of market share, but that is double what it was just a few years ago. On the back-end, the computers running the internet are almost universally run on linux and other forms of Unix. Windows now only represents a small fraction of that market.

Hey no problem. I'm a just computer geek.

I was on a Mac back in 84 and used to access the net via Unix, there was no yahoo back then you had to know the complete addy of where you were going and to d/l pics you had to use commands (I still remember -sz)

Windows had taken over the market way back when & keeps pushing like crazy, personally if I could get my jobs to go to Linux I would be a very happy camper

As for losing market share, I think it's Brazil, I am not sure if it's the entire country or cities, but they will not allow windows, they will only use Linux. And Mac is a much more stable system, when you have to uninstall something, it's very very easy and the graphics on a mac are excellent! Plus it wasn't until recently that someone was able to write a virus for Mac, they've been virus free for years!

Linux's main advantage is that it's free to use and it's extremely stable. It's disadvantage is that it requires significant knowledge of computers and programming to really use it well.

Mac OS X is very similar to Linux (it's based on FreeBSD, another Unix derivative) but it's significantly easier to use, and it's expensive.

Windows' problem is that they've actually been chasing Mac OS features since its inception. It's always a step or two (or more!) behind. However they won the marketing game way back in the 1980's so that's what we're stuck with.

And yes, it's definitely true that most of Linux's gain in the home and business end-user market is overseas.

And I'm learning to be one

the good thing about Linux is that it is very easy to switch between directories, much mroe so that Windows. Also easier to copy and move files into different directories.

Plus, it sure is easier to run fortran or MATLAB on LINUX or UNIX

If you are really comfortable with the command line, Linux is a far superior system to Windows or even Mac OS.
