Arlington school district bans grillz
ARLINGTON, Texas (WFAA ABC 8/AP) - The school district here has expanded its dress codes to include mouths — and earlobes.
Students may no longer wear mouth jewelry known as "grillz" — shiny teeth caps — or the earlobe-stretching practice known as "gauging."
"The district is having to respond to fads because they've become distracters or a safety hazard for those around them," said Malcolm Turner, the district's executive director of student services.
The nearby Irving, Grand Prairie and DeSoto districts also ban grillz, and some also address gauging — the process of placing increasingly large items in the ears to stretch the lobes.
But students said the body modification is simply self-expression.
"Really, a grill is just like an earring. It's fashion," said junior Devonte Wright, 16.
But school officials said they hoped to teach students that life would require them to follow specific regulations in specific settings.
"We want to instill in them a sense of modesty and a sense of community," said school board trustee Gloria Pena. "We're preparing them for the work force, and in the work force there are rules."

I heard a dentist on the noon news today give out some health hazard(s) advice regarding grillz.

And we wonder why our school systems are not the greatest. Between the kids demanding to do what they want and parents suing if they don't get it.

As a former brace-face, I just gotta wonder -- why would any WANT to look like a metal mouth? I'd never seen or heard of it before.
Then again, I'm getting so old. I didn't realize the word following "honky tonk" in the recent Trace Adkins song was an actual word (slang, nevertheless). I just thought he was doing some sort of rhyming nonsense. I got what the song was about -- just didn't realize that the word was summed-up slang for the whole thing.

I've never heard of teenagers wearing grillz. They are thousands of dollars.

So I wonder what happens in cases where people have those things permanently bonded to their teeth. How do they comply with the dress code?

I saw where this one rapper dude had over fifty thousand dollars of gold, platinum and diamonds bonded onto his teeth. This was over three or four years ago, so I bet that now 50-g's is just a "good start"

. Looks like these "grillz" are a removeable version of dental "bling"

. Won't be long before we read of kids gunning each other down and stealing them, just as with jackets and sneakers. As far as the school environment, I'm a big supporter of uniforms. They remove the classism and also stop gang attire. Cry about individuality all you like, but school is a place where the kids DO need to be uniform as they ARE there for a common goal: to learn.

I think these are similar to the plastic spinning rims you can buy at Wal-Mart for 20 dollars when the real ones cost 10,000.

A friend of mine wanted me to ask my mom who works with a jewelery company if they sell any grillz, she said they don't.

I always tried to use the "five year rule" with my teenagers. In other words will it matter 5 years down the line? Odd hair styles or colors --no matter (hair grows out). Skirts above the knee - no matter (they'll lower soon enough.) Skirts that ride above the crotch - matter (reputation if nothing else). Piercings - no matter (they will close eventually.) Piercings that are enlarged and cannot return to original size -- matter. Rub on tattoos - no matter. Burnt on tattoos - matter (before you are an adult.) Grillz as a teenage - matter. Grillz as an adult - no matter (if you have the money and don't mind ruining your teeth.)

Just this week, my mom who works for a jewelery company said (with a groan) that they have "grillz" in store.
