Has anyone read the series of books "Left Behind"? In light of what is going on in the middle east it gives me the shivers.

Yes, these are very entertaining! If you are a student of Bible prophecy, these books hold a parellel interest in addition to just being good stories. Don't read them at bedtime, you won't be able to get sleepy, and will read all night!

True to my nature, I've seen the movies instead of reading the books.

I've seen the movies too.
I wouldn't worry, the movie isn't exact to what will happen.

I've read the first one. Great story, but total fiction.

That's a whole other debate. My point was that the story is fiction since it's not telling a story about something that has already happened.
No need to get into a religious debate about whether it will or won't.

I wasn't going to initiate a religious debate. I was just curious about who had read the books. Read the first and was hooked on the rest. I also read the series for teens.

12 books and only 3 movies so far, the 3rd one just released covers the 2nd half of the 2nd book. The movies were OK, I guess, but I liked the books better. There's a lot more of the story you can't get in the movies. Also, the books get more hair-raising each succeeding one you read! They are fiction, of course. Many would classify them as science fiction, with all the strange creatures raining judgements, etc. Here's a timeline the books cover
