I will recognize some words and if I REALLY think about how to say a fairly common English word in Spanish I MAY remember it.

I remember when I went on vacation to Mexico in 2003 I had fun saying basic statements like "cafe con leche" and greeting the help with an "hola".

Como esta'?

Me llamo Stephanie.

Uno gatto se llama Gipper y esta nero y blanco.

Donde esta tu sposo(a)?

I think my spelling is off un poco.

Entendo muey un poco 8-)

Reason I asked, with huge influx of illegal immigrants streaming into the United States these days, seems like English has become the second language, or at least in Arizona....we (the police Dept) are being sent to immersion classes, for every 10 arrests that are made, "6" out of ten are now illegals    and this has just happened over the past month.

The only thing I learned to say in Cancun was "mucho freo Dos Equis". Yes, I drank a lot of cold beer!!!!

Very little and the very basics but I only took one semester of Spanish in College. Now my oldest daughter knows more than me. She has spanish in first grade at her school. My BIL, my sister's husband, is from the Panama Canal and he speak Spanish fluently. To communicate with his mom I have to speak a little. :)

We have a lot of people here who speak another language other than English. Our local schools here have ESL classes (English Second Language) and they are not allow to speak in their native language while at school. Actually I think that is sad because I think we all could benefit from learning a second language. One of the students came up to me one day while I was working in the snack bar at school and accidentally asked for something in spanish. I picked up on it right away and got the item for him before I realize that he didn't use English. He was frighten that I was going to get onto him for not using English since that was a policy at the school. Of course I didn't and talk a little to him in Spanish. Later I got a lecture from the other aide about not doing that.

And the teacher I worked with was going to start learning spanish because he wanted to be able to communicate with his Spanish students better in the class and make them feel more comfortable in the classroom. Still not a policy that is practice at the school.
