Last tuesday at 10 am I got a call from my wife telling me that the house was flooding with raw sewage coming out of the tub and toilet. When I got home water was still pouring out onto the floor. The hallway was flooded as was the master bedroom, half of the living room and parts of the other two bedrooms. The smell was really sickening. We are on a city septic system and what happened was that a pump started running and didnot shut off. It overheated and melted the plastic vale that normally keeps the sewage from back flowing into the house. the city crew was able to shut off the flow into the house before it was able to get to deep in the house. needless to say, all of the carpet in the house was ruined as was the furniture in the master bedroom and the computer table and couch, so all of that has to be replaced. We were fortunate that it did not get into the walls. Luckily the city has taken responsibility and is paying for everything including the motel that we stayed in up until today. We are now back home and slowly puting everything back together. New furniture comes on tuesday. After that all should be back to normal.

As my granny used to say, I would have had a hissy fit. Glad things are going to be okay with the delivery of the new furniture.

Wow, how horrible.
At least the city did jump right in and got you guys out of there and gave you enough funds to get new things. Are you guys doing the carpet yourselves or did you hire that out? Ewwww. Good luck.

I'm glad yoru city stepped up and accepted responsibility, at least. Where I work, in Venice Florida, the city has spent about 3 years refusing to pay for a church into which their sewer system backed up badly.

I am sorry that you had to go through this but luckily it was the city responsibility. We had a similar issue right after Ivan but it was our septic tank so we got stuck with the bill. We ended up pulling all of the carpet up in the hallway, living room and replacing it with ceramic tile. We ended replacing the trim on the wall. And it took forever to get the odor out.

Oh Gosh... poor you!!! Sorry way to get a "vacation", yea right.....I bet you will have tons of work to get your place back right!!! Suggestion: if you have a dehumidifier, or A/C... run it for several weeks, because if the humidity starts rising, sometimes it can "re-activate" the smell. Also, have you used one of those new enzyme cleaners..they are excellent for bacterial and waste smell cleanup.
Good Luck!!! Welcome Home.

Well, we've moved back in and are slowely getting things back to normal. New furniture arrives today. The carpet was put in last friday by the carpet people and so far no more smell. A/C has been on continuously since so hopefully no mold. Now if I could only get my wireless to work.
