Texas School District Bans Cleavage

(CBS) ARLINGTON, Texas With a new school year about to begin, some female students in one Texas school district may have to rethink their wardrobes.

Teen fashions often leave parents a little disgruntled. Arlington Independent School District parent Frances Henson said, “I'm thinking that our daughters are growing up a little bit too fast these days.”

Arlington School Board members agree with parents and this summer, they adopted an unusual amendment to the student dress code.

The new dress code reads, in part, “The display of cleavage is unacceptable. Low cut blouses, tops, sweaters, etc. with plunging necklines are not allowed."

“It's gotten bad enough that, unfortunately, our young males are looking at more than their English book, their speech book, their science book,” says school board president Sherri Wade. “And it's kind of nice to have something left to the imagination.”

Even some teenagers agree there is a problem. “I think it's good that they're doing it,” said student, Tyler Edwards.

Others students say it makes back-to-school shopping more difficult. “I just have to be more careful with what shirts I buy. Change my style a little,” said student, Maria Lopez.

While most parents support the new rule, some worry that enforcing it could be a challenge. “I think that's going to be a little tricky, because it puts a little bit of a policeman approach to the educators, and they really need to focus more on teaching,” said Tom Pederson, AISD parent.

The school board president says they'll do both… and in time, she says, the no cleavage rule will be no problem.

Had a woman become a member of our church (was a week ago from yesterday) and mercy...the congregation (and not just the men) must have wondered..."Where's the rest of it?!"

Schools need to be a place of learning with as few distractions as possible. No one can expect a young male to focus on learning when there are female students showing more than what they should.

There were few times I actually looked forward to school....cleavage and short skirts made me eager to get on the bus and get edjumakated.... In all seriousness I agree school is a place for learning and looking a cleavage and shorts skirts makes it dang tough to concentrate.

Wow! the schools in my home state are getting tougher and tougher on their rules!

First, they're banning piercings and the new "grillz", now they're banning cleavage...I like that.

Females here where I work can't wear low cut tops. I don't see the BIG deal. Maybe a few more boys will keep their eyes on the blackboard (do they still have them in schools) instead of trying to look down a girls shirt.....MGC

So what are they going to ban next? Watches, because looking at them might distract the students? Earrings? High-heeled shoes?

I'm very glad I don't have to go to school in Texas.

I agree uniforms make it a lot easier to control what is worn, so no hub-bub starts.

On All schools?

Cause I know some TX school districts already enforced uniforms on all Elementary and Jr. High/Middle schools.

Yeah, pretty much all school districts in all of South Louisiana have uniform restrictions, and it all started because people abuse not having to wear uniforms and go to school in clothes that they shouldn't have.

Same here. But, my daughter still wants the name brand "uniform" pants and shirts.
