I am having a problem connecting to my wireless internet with my laptop. I can tap into someone elses wireless but not myown. My laptop says I have a strong connection and geat signal but I cannot get on the internet with it. I am using windows XP and a D-Link router. I am runing an ethernet cable from the cable modem to the WLAN 1 port and another from #2 prot to the desktop. Could it be the router, my setup or something with the laptop? Thanks for any help.

My first suggestion woudl be to unplug the power to the cable modem and the router. Wait a few seconds and plug the router back in first and then plug the cable modem back in. You may have a simple IP or MAC address error, and this would cure that.

I tried that but still no worky, when my wife takes the laptop elsewhere, she has no problem getting on the internet. It just will not work here.

I had a faulty wireless router. I replaced it and everything is working great. Its tough to spend money when you arent sure what the problem is but it might be the only way to find out whats going on.

Yeash, I'd have to go with fwbbreeze's suggestion, then. You may have a faulty router.

Is encryption enabled on the router, and if so do you have the key entered properly on the laptop?

Not a big computer wiz so how do I check that?

I don't think that's your problem since you said your computer recognizes that there is a network. Without the proper encryptiuon key, your system wouldn't even see the network.

Yeah - try that. If it doesn't help it, routers are returnable.

I had the same problem. It's your network not your router. Follow the instructions and make sure the settings on your desk top match the laptop settings. Try to use the network setip wizard as well. Hope this helps.

It would see the network. I had the exact same probpem the other day. Once I entered the correct WEP key I was golden.

Chances are If you don't know anything about WEP keys then it won't be your problem. If the standard re-boot of PC and router doesn't work then I would try a new router like people suggested.

Try a new router. Exact same problem I had last week during Chris. In the end, I changed the router, which was a D-Link too, and everything was well again.

Well I got a new router and now when I hook it up via the tutorial provided and now I am unable to even get on the internet on my desktop. I am so lost and fustrated at this point, any suggestions? I took the router out so I could at least get on here.

If you got a new router make sure to install the software that came with it on the desktop computer. I use Linksys not too sure how D Link works. But anyway when I have problems on my laptop I click the icon for wireless on the bottom of my desktop then view wireless networks and make sure your connected there or go to Start then connect to all connections make sure your wireless is enabled if not right click to enable it. The new router is netscape. I was following the tutorrial up to the point where it said to access the internet and from there I could not go any father because I could not access the internet. Will try again tomorrow.

I agree with Rainband. I think it's a setting. I was in IT for several years, I'd love to get your laptop in front of me (not quite the same over a message board) and figure this out. I gotta say, it intrigues me.

Yeah, finally figured it out. Apperantly my modem would not work unless all wires were connected before turning on. The router specifies that the wires be hooked up in a certain order with the modem on. Once I tried hooking all the wires up and then turning on the modem and computer, everything fell right into place and all is now well. The original router was probably good, it was just the way I was connecting it.

Well that make sense, though definately not the first thing you would think of in today's world of plug-n-play devices. Glad to hear it's working.
