My family and I have 2 cats and a kitten. Recently all of them are having runny eyes,coughing,and I think congestion. My question is can cats have allergies? If not should they be checked out by a vet??? Thankyou.

I don't have cats but I know dogs get something called "Kennel Cough" which is dangerous and highly contagious...I would take 'em to the vet JUST in case, I don't know if cats develop kennel cough or not Cat persons can step in here!

I have 12 cats, mostly outside. Have had lots of cats since living here. I have never had a cat with a runny nose and a cough. I would definately take them to a vet. It would be strange if they all came down with allergies. My cats have had liver problems, etc. I can't ever remember one coughing except when they had a furball which is normal.

Not to long ago they had a cold I think.

I dont own cats (moms allergic) however we have 3 dogs, a bunny, a turtle, a ton of fish, and a birdy...oh...and a couple of shrimp...yep, the Bruno family farm...

Sounds like they have conjunctivitis. You need to get eye cream for their eyes. As for the cough, that comes with the eye infection and you just have to let it run its course.

If you introduced the kitten to the cats you already have, then chances are the new kitten gave it to the other cats. When you bring a new kitten home you need to isolate it from the other cats for at least 3 days to a week. Then take the kitten to the vet.

Yes, I guess I have just been lucky with not many sick cats. I just think cats are tough down here in PR.....

We have had the kitten for about a month.

I have a yorkie Chloe who is 7 and half months old. Never owned a cat before. My yorkie used to sneeze a lot but not anymore. So, I don't know.

It takes that long for it to show up. Chalk this one up to experience. When you have 11 cats already and bring in two new twin kittens without checking them out first, you have trouble.

I have three cats that had this same thing. I isolated them to another room. I only took one to the vet though. My vet said that it will just have to run its course. They were sneezing, coughing, runny eyes. He was right. What these three had your cats may have. I was just lucky I caught it before all my cats were infected.

Yes, they get viral and bacterial infections just like us. My cats have had them before, the vet gives them some antibiotics. The conjuntivitis(runny eyes) is a side effect of the infection and if that is present they will also give you a creme to put in the eyes as Linda said. You should get them to the vet and have them looked at. Good luck.

Cats do not get colds. Alot of people think that what your cats have is a cold. I would take one of them to the vet, since all three of them have it. If I had my choice on which one to bring it would be the kitten. Be sure you tell your vet that all three have the symptoms. The reason you should bring just one is there is no sense in paying triple at the vet when you can pay one price and get the medicines.

Not colds like we do though, we can't catch theirs and they can't catch ours. They are just that, upper respiratory infections, not colds. lol. My veternarian used to laugh at me when I would say that. Anyway, your best bet is to just take the cat to the vet.

You can call it a cold if you want to though.
