Are people REALLY that STUPID or is this a freak turn of events. We had yet 2 MORE people struck by lightning yesterday, sadly, one was a fatality....but my God man, these people were STANDING on another BOAT dock during a thunderstorm this makes "7" people struck by lightning this monsoon season, granted....we've had the most intense lightning I've ever seen but still, seriously, are people REALLY that stupid anymore? Sorry but Jimminy Christmas

We talked to the EMT that took care of the *gentleman* who was struck 2 weeks ago on the other aluminum boat dock, said he had talked him, he's very weak, can't talk too much, doesn't remember anything and he has to lay on his stomach for at LEAST another 6 possibly 8 weeks due to the "exit" wound he suffered....his partner on the other hand is home but not working, he suffered 3rd degree burns on his legs, feet and gluts.

You'd think that after the first one or two, people would start being more cautious.

Problem is too many people think it cant happen to them. After 2 near misses in my life time I know better.

wait...they were standing on a metal boat dock in a thunderstorm? poor them yes...but come on people...its called common sense...

They were competing for a Darwin Award.

Hey Dennis. Coming from the Midwest where a whole lot of lightning is cloud-to-cloud, not cloud-to-ground, I've discovered it's a whole different situation out here. MUCH of the lightning is CG, and that may be part of the reason for people's stupidity. When a storm is near, that lightning in AZ is extra dangerous.

With many transplants and visitors from other states, they remember (as I do) that direct lightning strikes weren't that common.

There's a friend of mine that likes to stand out in the middle of a major thunderstorm.

If you get hit by lightning and are lucky enough to live u have a good chance of having neurological problems such as memory loss and personality changes for the rest of your life. This is in addition to the severe burns that can be produced by a lightning strike. These burns often appear superficial at the entrance and exit points but they are DEEP and muscle and internal organs are damaged. Often people live for days or even weeks after getting hit only to succumb to infection or multiple organ failure..or both.

Absouletly right George, as I said with the first victim this year, the exit wound/area YEOW...I can't even imagine the pain, the suffering this *gentlemen* went through, just think, if he would have ONLY listened to TWC, any news source for that matter...."If you can hear thunder, even in the distance, take shelter INSIDE and stay away from windows, doors, stay off the phone and don't take a shower!"

My bad.....the guys weren't on the boat dock, they were UNDER a TREE (which is JUST as BAD "DUH!")

WHITE MOUNTAINS - Lightning struck and killed one man and injured another last Sunday when several men, fishing near the dam at Hawley Lake, took shelter under a tree as it began to rain.

According to a press release issued by the Apache County Sheriff's Office, lightning hit the tree and Jason Tyrell (J.T.) Woods, age 20 of Pima, and Brent Braithwaite, age 29 of Flagstaff. Both men were transported to Navopache Regional Medical Center in Show Low where Woods was pronounced dead on arrival. Braithwaite was later flown to the Maricopa Medical Center burn unit for further treatment. A third man with the group was knocked to the ground by the lightning but was not injured.
"It's monsoon season here and storms come up quickly, particularly in the mountains," said Apache County Deputy and Public Information Officer Richard Guinn. "Keep a close watch on the weather while outdoors and if you observe lightning, get indoors quickly."
Woods leaves his parents Russell and Jonnett Woods and other family members in Pima.
