For you pet owners, which do you prefer, a male or female? I cannot STAND male dogs, they *ump everything that moves or doesn't move they hike their leg and pee all over everything! I've owned nothing but female dogs since I was a kid...they are more gentle, loving and they LISTEN (unlike some human females I know.....*runs for cover*)!

I like female dogs and cats. I have them fixed. They are cleaner and the female cats don't spray. I think males tend to wander and roam off a lot more. Males are too aggressive and like to bully

I like female dogs and male cats..Always had a female dog growing up.. I find that most male cats are more affectionate... although I have 3 female dogs, i have 1 female cat, the other 3 are boys...

I've had female dogs all my life, and when I did get around male dogs, they were just hyper and unenjoyable, at least compared to the female dogs.

And I agree with everything you say there . . . it's the cold, hard truth.

As we began the search for our family dog 6 years ago, my husband said he had one request - that it be a female. He grew up with female Samoyad's (sp?) and he said they were the better gender, for family pets. I hadn't really thought about it until he said why. Many of the reasons you stated Dennis. We searched our animal shelter for weeks but they dogs there were almost grown and so our oldest who was afraid of dogs at that point (why we wanted a dog too, so she'd get over her fear), we knew we were better off with a puppy. That's why we decided on a Golden. We've never regretted getting Hope. She's such a major part of this family - my daughter I joke.

But I will say she was quite hyper that first year, very! I'd take her for walks and see male dogs being calmly walked by their owners. Meanwhile I was being walked by my hyper dog who was a peeing mess when she met people - they'd say, oh my she's losing her bladder (she did this for a couple of years). I'd just smile, thinking - oh it must be nice to have a calm dog. I had no idea what that was like.

I did wonder if we should have gone the male route but now I don't feel this way. She's calmed down around us but still goes nuts for company.

I grew up having all female pets. My sister had a male cocker spaniel when we were young and he was as mean as mean can be. I now have a male dog and a male cat. Ernie (the terrible terrier) is terrific except when company comes and then he is hyper for about 15 minutes or so. Louie (amazing Siamese) is a sweet, gentle and loving cat. He's in the house ALL of the time - he's been outside maybe 3 times in his 13 years.

I think that female dogs are probably the calmest and most gentle but I wouldn't trade Ernie for any of them.

Well I am going against the grain here but I prefer male cats. They seems so much more laid back and better with children. I have always had male cats except this last one that adopted us she is female and sweet as could be, but if I had to pick I would choose a male for a cat. Oh yeah I had a female as my first kitty also one I found in the woods when I was about 6. She was pregnant and ended up delivering in my bed while I was sleeping. But we kept a male from the litter and has been males every since.

Female for dogs. I have had a male dog that was great but prefer females. I have a girl and a boy right now. The boy is the females son, the only pup she had so we kept him. He is so sweet. Never had a hump problem with him, you have to get them fixed early.

I prefer female pets also...male cats spray...nasty! and male dogs urine kills the grass and they do hump everything even when fixed...

i prefer females. they appear to be more loyal and dont have to mark their territory like my husband does.

If you own a female cat that isn't spayed, you'll find out pretty quick once she goes into heat that the "only male cats spray" thing is a HUGE myth.

Funny you say that, I have heard that before. Also I have never had a spray problem with any of my male cats and only had one spayed. They never sprayed in my house. Outside maybe, but so does all the other neighborhood cats.

After owning a a few male cats as a child, when I was about 8 we picked up a female kitten in the junkyard. Boots stayed with us for 20 years and was the most loyal cat that a person could be owned by.

I have 2 female and 1 male. All three are enjoyable, loving, and very friendly and playful. One of my females is much more agressive than the male though but only to strangers and other dogs. And as for humping, get him fixed and that problem is solved.

Yes they do....the fixed thing is a myth also! We have friends that come up to their summer cabin one weekend a month, they have ALL male dogs (great dogs mind you) but ALL of them are cut and when they get excited, they hump each OTHER and if your unlucky enough to be around, your leg will work for them too.....I am a BIG dog lover BUT, male dogs, eh, they have their place in the world I guess "LOL!"

Male cats are MUCH MORE affectionate than females.

the only dog I've had is my dog Rudy who's male. I'm SURROUNDED by males right now! Something's wrong here...

i dont know anything about cats since i've never had one and am not likely to get one anytime soon. husband is allergic (or so he says...) interesting that a male cat would be more affectionate but female dogs are more affectionate than male ones. i learn something new every day.

My dog, Rudy is fixed and every night he's gotta hump Marty's arm (we allow him on our couch - heck the cats are on it as well; we have NO CONTROL!).
