some cats put out a noise that humans cant hear, but to be sure take him to the vet.

Well, gosh, Bud...stop threatening him with a gun!

Seriously, I'm not sure what it could be...never heard of that before. But your avatar made it just too irresistable not to comment. :)

I know some kittens who do that, but not a mature 1 year old. Was he able to meow in the past? If so it could be a few things from reading around the web. She could have a respiratory infection, or something stuck in her throat. If it doesn't go away in a day or so I would take her to the vet. Good luck. BTW I did not read anything anywhere about a pitch we can not hear, not saying its untrue just didn't read anything like that when I just did a google on it.

Actually, I have a male cat, Milo (kind of looks like that poor kitty in your avatat) that doesn't meow either - RARELY. He usually "pisses and moans" when he doesn't like something (like if I'm hugging him or kissing him too much  ). There was one time I couldn't find him - he didn't come out for breakfast and I looked all around. I got Marty up and we kept looking. We finally found him in our tall kitchen trash bin. He was trying to get to some flowers I had on my counter and apparently when he stepped on the lid it dumped him in the trash! If he meowed, I would've known right then and there but it wasn't until Marty looked in there that we found him. I got dirty looks from him because I tossed the empty can of cat food in the trash, probably on top of him without seeing him in there.

I would just get him checked out to be on the safe side.

However, if your usually chatty cat falls silent, a physical problem may be to blame. Sometimes cats stop talking or grow hoarse because their larynx is inflamed (the condition known as laryngitis). This can occur as a result of a medical condition or stress. Consult your vet to identify the cause and treat it promptly.

OMG Steph....you have me rolling with your story! hahahaha

Bud, I'd take kitty to vet to be sure nothing is wrong.

Probably laryngitis..cats get it too. As long as your kitty is eating and breathing normally I wouldnt worry about something being in his throat. A trip to the vet is in order though.

When we had our cat she didnt meow for a few days. Opened her mouth but no sound came out. I put on my protective gear and wrestled her into the cat carrier and drove her to the vet. As soon as the vet got her in the exam room she starting raising holy hell(it was feeding time  ). The vet found nothing wrong with her and she serenaded me in the car all the way home.

Good luck!
