It's Official!

My boss, the Associate Dean, sent out the official announcement today:
I am now Manager of the Institute of Teacher Education at Palm Beach Community College.
This includes managing two grant programs to recruit and train career persons with non-teaching bachelor degrees who want to become K-12 teachers (Transition to Teaching and Teachers on Track), an education paraprofessional training program (PRO), a program for training and supporting Hispanic educators (TASHE), and planned programs for substitute teacher training and for re-certification of professionally certified teachers. In addition, I am department head for 10 adjunct faculty members who teach education courses for PBCC's Florida-approved alternative teacher certification program (EPI/TCP). Approximately 20 people are now or will be reporting to me. And I'll also continue teaching one ed course per semester as well as advising program participants and working on various college committees.
A fair amount of county and state travel will be required, as well as occasional trips to Washington, D.C. and national conferences. Usual office hours are 8-5 weekdays, although I rarely leave that early at this stage of the learning curve and many lunch hours are spent at my desk; Monday and Wednesday evenings my class runs from 6:30-9:00, so those days are long. Evenings and Saturdays are required as needed for faculty, program, and FTCE seminars or info sessions.
The job is quite demanding and more than a little confusing (The Florida public education system is particularly fond of acronyms, as you can see). But it's exciting to be stretching my own intellectual growth.
I am absolutely thrilled and filled with enthusiasm about this position! As an educator since 1972, the opportunity to be so deeply involved in an organization which so highly values education and the training of educators brings my career full circle.
To tweak an old saying, I guess you can teach an old broad new tricks!
