Near this location, there is a fairly large population of Amish people. They travel in black, unlit, horse-drawn buggies; the only accommodation to modern life being a flourescent orange triangle mounted on the back. On certain roads, it is very common to come up on a buggy as you are driving. They clip along at about 15 to 20 mph. Evidence of the horses is abundant on the roads, if you know what I mean.

That leads to my question: Does a horse have to stop to poop? Or can they poop on the fly? It's not a dumb question, because if I'd be driving behind one of them, would they ever have to stop suddenly to heed a different command?

Dey poop on the da fly...our parades out west here are mostly horse drawn and the poor clean up guy that follows the parades..."Road apples for sale, get 'em while they're hot!"

Yup - most of 'em do #2 on the fly. Some horses insist on stopping; and most of them try to stop for #1. I never found horse poo to be offensive - just chewed up grass and grain. Now fresh cow patties or pig droppings on the other hand... peeee yuuuuuuuu!

Not dumb at all. I've wondered the same question. Our dog has to sniff around for a while, choosing the best spot. Sometimes a marker pee/squat is needed first. Then more sniffing. Finally, the stance. Horses seem to just lift the tail. LOL

My "dumb" question is this - I pick up our dog's #2 with plastic grocery bags. Just ~what~ do they use for horse droppings? A hefty bag? A shovel? LOL

Of course with a horse, you could hardly miss that pile. With a dog, it's often camouflaged. Hope will not go on pavement, it has to be grass that either she already went on or another dog did. Or the best spot - on top of another dog's pile!

I train long distance race horses.... 50-100 mile races. We actually teach these horses to drink, POOP, and pee on the run. It's kind of like the Tour d' France..... there is NO time to stop for those natural functions during the race. By the way... people can drink on the run... but us ladies have yet to discover a way to pee while riding a horse!! LOL

Never thought of this topic as amusing, but I am sitting here chuckling!!!!

Hey Grimmy - I had a horse for a few years, but what I don't know about them would still fill a book. How do you get them to pee on the fly? Don't think I've ever seen that happen before. And I never thought about being a jocky and getting a face full of horse pee in a race!

All of my horses will STOP. I never take them out on the roads though. When I was on the drill team, my horse would STOP and all the other horses would stop too, right in the middle of the parade.

You can train them to not stop though.

Pooping on the fly isn't hard.... the peeing thing takes alot of time....geldings usually can't do it. Opposite of the Tour d' France....LOL Horses have to "let down" the hose first.

I dont know... But what I do know is if you are ever at the dog or horse track and you see one of them "un load" just before the race, put on your money on them.. lol

Seriously speaking, I never thought of this betting strategy before. I could never bet at a dog park though (I'd be crying) and I'm barely able to keep my eyes dry at the horse racing park! But that does make sense - the bigger the animal, the bigger the dump and less weight to run. Imagine how much an elephant loses each time? LOL

EWWWWWWWWWWW now Miss Mary, I never thought of you leading the pack on poo poo talk......lol!!!!!! However I will add that there is a heck of a lot of difference between the size of a pony poo poo to a Percheron poo poo!!!!!!
