I am no fan of taxation and I have no problem with people legally avoiding taxes any way they can. When they delve into the illegal, though, I have no sympathy whatsoever. We all use government services every day, and we should all pay for those services.

I'm so confused by how you think.

snipes celebrity status doesnt matter to me here. if he were a rich guy no one had ever heard of i would feel the same way. i am no fan of onerous taxation. dont be too confused as i feel what snipes may have done to be entirely different than if he were charged with rape, murder, or child molestation.
here is an example of another celebrity getting criticised for avoiding taxes, though in this case its legal. if bono could get out of paying any taxes legally i would applaud him.

I would have some sympathy if he was a working stiff trying to get by but this is a millionaire trying to avoid paying his due. Judges tend to show little leniency to people like this and he will probably serve several years in a federal prison.

If he lived in the woods and wrote a book I'd feel sorry for him.

I'm surprised if it is true. I always liked him as an actor.
Everyone has to pay their fair share.

You know, some of you are quick to judge someone. No one knows the facts in this case. Just because he is a celebrity you are just downright judging!
Good thing no one judged the company I work for. Mistakes can be made by the IRS. They are NOT gods like they want you to believe they are. Second, ALOT of people do not know that some of the IRS's scare tactics are illegal.
Or should I say just a working stiff.

Im not judging anyone here Linda. But I find it hard to believe that federal prosecutors would seek, and get, a criminal indictment without some hard evidence. Seems like there was some "creative accounting" going on here.

Well, the IRS officer tried to get tax evasion on my boss and the way he went about it was illegal. He also tried to levy accounts receivable with no proper notice. What probably happened is the firm he used to do his taxes did not produce the documents. You can get by 3 years without even filing 1040's. Known fact.
The CPA that was supposedly doing the taxes is charging my boss for services that he did not do. But yet, he will not produce an itemized statement of charges. Been trying to get it out of him for a month now. Second, he knew about the IRS's mumbo jumbo and did nothing to contact the IRS officer and this CPA HAD all of the business and personal documents.
I have just experienced something you never want to experience. A CPA can be just as crooked as the IRS. PLUS just because you are indicted, that does not mean squat nor does it prove guilt.
Like I said, let's wait for everything to come out.

An indictment is issued by a grand jury consisting of citizens just like you and me. I didnt say it proves guilt. It means the level of evidence is enough to bring him to trial. Thats it. I havent seen too many ppl walk away from criminal tax charges though.

george, you actually got the article too when you said there is "creative accounting" going on.
You haven't seen too many people walk away from federal tax charges because they did not have the proper representation nor did they comply with a summons from the IRS asking for files, records, documents.
This firm was supposed to be filing his taxes, obviously they didn't. IMO, he is being singled out because of who he is. I JUST went through this mess. lol.
Nowhere in that article does it say he was even audited.
I even stopped this officer in his tracks when he tried to seize one of our trucks. He left without it. Wanna call him and ask him if he likes me?
He even went as far as to tell me that I better not have anything in my closet. Oh yeah, it was on then. That phrase "You can't beat the IRS" is laughable. Do not know where it came from, but whoever made that up, lied.

As george noted, an indictment is not just idle speculation. He didn't file a retunr for 6 years even though he earned taxable income. That alone is enough top send someone to prison. Further, the guy he is dealing with is known for convincing people (incorrectly) that the US government doesn't have the authority to collect taxes.
