Government Officially Recalls Sony Laptop Batteries

UPDATED: 10:44 am EDT October 24, 2006

-- A Sony laptop battery recall has been made official.

The recall involves 340,000 batteries in the United States and nearly 10 million worldwide.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a formal recall notice for U.S. consumers. The government said the batteries could catch fire. Sony will replace them free of charge.

Computers made by Gateway, Dell, Apple, Lenovo and Sony's Vaio brand are among those affected.

Sony executives are apologizing on Tuesday for the global recall, acknowledging that the troubles had caused worries and inconvenience to consumers.

The Japanese electronics and entertainment company said improvements in production, design and inspection have been made to prevent a recurrence of laptop overheating problems.

Company officials said they were caused by microscopic metal particles that mistakenly got inside the battery, causing short-circuiting.
