Back in England!

Hello,

Don;t know if anyone remembers me from last winter and srping. But I'm the British person who lived in Columbus, Ohio for 2 years..i was gord_on_wheels but that account has been de-activated..probably because i haven't posted in a while!

Anyway, some people on here asked me to check back in once i was back in the UK...so here I am, and i'm still finding this board fascinating! A little sad that I'm not there geting ready for a US winter...as a UK one rarely throws up the good nowadays. Anyway, I'll save the weather stuff for the Global weather forum.

But thought I'd pop back in to say hello, particuluraly those in Ohio who helped me out a lot when i was in Columbus...whom through research I've just found out that for the first time this autumn, the UK is set to be colder than Ohio this week...though not too much!

Glad you had a safe trip back home. It's nice to hear you enjoyed our country. Hopefully you'll be able to come back one day. Also glad you like our board so much. It is a great place to be....all year long!

Hey, welcome back, Gord! I was wondering where you were (although I did know you were back in England).

Nice to see you posting again!

Yeah, sorry i haven't posted, got back at the start of June...and its been a crazy summer getting a job and a house and a car sorted and things.

Its been like leaving one life behind and starting a whole new other...or picking up one i left behind anyway!

It was fun going through all the boxes i had put into storage over the 2 years i was away anyway! Downside is that i've now seen every episode of the simpsons that comes on the TV over here...even if its advertised as 'brand new'!

So Gord - any plans of returning to the States?

Need to check my visa regulations. I read that once my visa expires..i cannot set foot in the states again for another two years...but i think all that means is that i cannot apply for another visa in the next two years.

Seeing that the states sees us as a friendly country, i think i can visit the states as UK citizens qualify for the visa waiver..which gives me 3 months visiting time.

So yeah, if i can afford it, i would love to come back, not only to see Columbus again but try and visit some parts i never made it too, (basically most of it)

I would hope that we do see the UK as friendly! The UK above anyone else really. Australia would be second in my book.....

One day I hope to visit England. That has always been a dream of mine :D

Gord!!! Welcome back to S2K. Of course I remember you. You wanted a good old fashioned Ohio Winter in the worst way last winter. It just wasn't meant to be......if we get one, I will PM you all the details. Count on it!

So, do you really miss Ohio? Did you ever get to hike in the Hocking Hills region (my personal favorite back to nature area on this earth)?

Are you teaching yet? If my memory is correct, you were in under grad or graduate school, for Education I believe?

Thanks so much for checking in. We don't like to lose touch with S2K family members.....

Mary

I did make it to the Hocking Hills in my first winter in Ohio...but the trip didn't last long as i slipped on ice and fractured my elbow!

I hope Ohio gets the winter it deserves this time around. But things may not be too bad for me as I found on a UK weather forum I've been a member on for years that the part of England I live in can have a part of a very local event. When the wind turns North Westerly, it can cause a narrow stream of very heavy snow showers to devlop over the Irish sea and filter there way down over North Wales and end up right over me! So maybe I can get a very good but very local winter here! However, this event can mean a metter of a mile or two so we'll see.

I am currently teaching 9 and 10 year olds (Year 5 here in England, i think thats Grade 4 over there?). I graduated in England 3 years ago and was teaching in a child care centre in Worthington, Ohio. But this is my first full on teaching job...so to speak!

I do remember all the help you gave me with the weather Mary when I was there, and i appreciate it. I'll be talking about my weather over here in the global forum..but will still check in the other forums to see what I'm missing!

I do miss ohio. I watch american movies on TV and it takes me right back..even little things like seeing the yellow traffic lights hanging over intersections! It also made us a bit sad wathcing the daily show last week from Columbus. We get the Daily Show over here one night after its broadcast in the US..and it does have a small following over here. Jon Stewart is fairly well known in the UK and has appeared on quite a few British shows.

I am pleased to be abck home in Europe. Being able to run a tiny car that can go a long way on petrol (or gas as you call it..see, i'm getting back into the British language!). Having a pork pie or sausage roll for lunch. Being able to flow around roundabouts instead of waiting for ever at red lights. driving a car with gears...i really missed that one! I'm also enjoying being able to hop on a bus or a train and going almost anywhere on it. Couldn't really do that in Columbus.

But I miss a lot of things about Ohio. I miss that 'can do' attitude..all the Brits ever do is moan about stuff! I want to shake people here and tell them to lighten up. I want to say good morning and get a good morning back..just like in Columbus! (though to be fair, as i've got to know people in the village i live in, it is happening more). There is a lot of food and drink i miss. I miss corn bread and proper lemonade (not the fizzy awful lemonade you get over here). We're going to try and make our own corn bread though!

Most of all i miss First Watch for breakfast. What a great restuarant!

Hi Gord

Did you work for Worthington Industries in their child care center?? My daughter lives in the Columbus area in New Albany. She loves it there too.

I think when Sunny makes the trip to England, I'll tag along. I know I have distant relatives there. Can you buy corn meal over there?? If you can, I'll get you a great recipe for your cornbread.

I think 9 and 10 year olds would be the most rewarding to teach. God Bless you for being a teacher. I admire them so.

We have a restaurant here in Pittsburgh that specializes in bangers and spuds. I think you'd probably like that.

Great to have you back.

Come on sis, we will have a blast!! Gord will act like he don't know us though I'm afraid :cheesy: He'll be over there going "I don't know those crazy Americans" - lol!

Gord, my ancestors were from Somerset, England. They took the boat to America
around the turn of the century, 1900's - the Holloways. I have always wanted
to go there and delve into my English roots. I love my Earl Grey tea and biscuits,
and, I am the only person in my family who can sing the first verse to "God Save
the Queen".

Do come visit us, again. And, keep the "can do" attitude with your kids - Heaven
knows, it'll help them go far in this world!

No roundabout at all?? They won't have the fun of roundabouts such as the Magic Roundabout in Hemel Hempstead then, always fun going round that if you are still a learner driver. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_Roundabout_%28Hemel_Hempstead%29
