My grandpa on my stepdad's side of the family had a minor stroke/heart attack on Monday night. Well I just had a call from my mother. He's being transferred from St. Luke East hospital to St. Elizabeth South hospital, and at 3pm will undergo an angioplasty. They believe he has three arteries clogged right now and don't know what is going on. Prayers are appreciated...thanks...

Doctors are gonna do open heart surgery. Not known when yet or what procedure will be done. When I know, you'll know.

It's amazing what the doctors can do today. Your grandpa will be just fine rock. I know quite a few people who have had open heart surgery and have done beautifully after. But I will continue my prayers for him.

I know it. Not to toot my own horn but I'm living proof of it. Remember, you're looking at a man twice thought dead from a bladder rupture.

I believe he will pull through. I have since this all started. I will obviously be at the hospital the day he has the surgery...

Probably gonna have bypass surgery. It's when they take arteries from the leg and put them around the blockage on the heart. My dad had that kind of surgery.

That's the belief from my perspective. Does anyone know how long the standard wait time is between an angioplasty and a bypass or other open heart surgery? That would give me some sort of timeline so I know what day I should plan to be at the hospital with him...

about 2 to 3 hrs depending on how many (double, triple bypass, etc)
Plan on spending the whole day at the hospital.

A usual minimum between an angiogram and open heart surgery is a minimum of at least 12 hours, I think., at least in "emergency" situations. When my wife had it done they wanted to operate immediately, but had to wait 12 hours till the next morning before they could operate. She had mitral valve repair surgery.

OK so it could be as early as this morning then. The timing makes sense. I am expecting it would happen sometime between 9am today and late Sunday. Thanks vb...

Apparently they're going to wait 6 weeks. And my grandma is now staying with us but she doesn't remember anything for more than 5 minutes...

He has to be strong for the surgery. He'll do fine.
