I was doing some research on the 1971 San Fernando 6.6 quake and found some archived news online. One reporter described it this way: (it happened at 6:02 am,Feb.9)

"The series of earth movements began with one sharp jolt, intensifying each second, and peaked in 45 seconds to a shuddering crescendo of rocking andswaying. The quake pent it's maximum force in the next eight seconds, then tappered off in a slow series of shocks and tremors"

I remember this quake.I was 9 years old and we lived 10 miles from the epicenter.
