There were. A 6-in tsunami hit. All warnings now cancelled by the JMA.

It appears a 7.2 hit Vanuatu at about the same time. MSNBC is reporting that the USGS initally issued the Japan quake a magnitude of 7.3, but as of this post they list it as 6.7
